Whilst you're browsing the menu make sure your have the scotch eggs as a pre-snack - you'll be glad I'm another vote for Le Manoir. Was there a few weekends back. Services and atmosphere was a lot lighter than I expected. Was good to see that the dishes on the two tasting menus (7 and 10 courses) were completely different (though with the usual all on the table must do the same) and that there were some other dishes on the a la carte. Also there was a distinct lack of foam (one of my pet hates and a downside to Midsummer House where it felt like at least half the dishes had it, making you bloated - still would go back there.
Hand and Flower I had mixed views about - food was good, but not sure it was quite up to the standard I'd expect, but our table was in a bad position with very poor lighting and well and truly not up to the standards of a place costing that much.
Some one mentioned Artichoke in Amersham - not aware of it having a Michelin star, but myself and my foodie buddy are hoping to go there next.

Not wanting to sway your decision at all, but...My wife and I and some friends went to the Royal Oak last month.
I was really looking forward to it and had been perusing the menus and wine list in advance (I'm sad like that).
Whilst my steak was nice - it's the only good thing I can say about it. We were a table of 9 and they had a larger party in on the same night - but this basically RUINED the service we received. I think we waited over 90mins for starter and then had another lengthy wait for mains.
They were very apologetic. But as a professional chef once told me, "a restaurant is only as good as it's busiest night".
You might not suffer the same service issues if there's just the 2 of you. So good luck and let us know how you get on.
Another Le Manoir fan here - it's not the best meal I've ever had - but for consistency, quality of service and sense of occasion it's right up there. Friends and I are going a week on Friday and I'm looking forward to it.
I'm also keen to try The Ledbury after seeing recommended on here.
Mr Dog, you're fairly local to me, and we're local to this: http://www.nuttreeinn.co.uk
Very nice village place that is serving great food in a chilled setting. Even pop there for a beer every so often.

My first time at the Oak was disappointing on the service side, they were very snobby/stuck up at first but did lighten up after a while. The food redeemed the experience and it was a totally different experience the 2nd time. I'd definitely go back.
No one mentioned L'Ortolan?
I'd not worry about it being French or Chinese or Indian. It will be so far removed from 'normal' food the sign about the door is often more or a using techniques and ideas from x. You don't get snails or frogs legs or foie gras every course and the chef is normally happy to offer alternatives.

You went to a michelin starred restaurant, that wasn't a steak house, and ordered steak. Your opinion isn't relevant. Such a waste of a good opportunity. My wife and I and some friends went to the Royal Oak last month.

I'm not a massive foodie, but enjoyed it and appreciated it was above the standard of a 'normal' place.

What a strange post. Customer is disappointed by something served by the restaurant but their opinion is invalid because they ordered the 'wrong' thing? I would expect most Michelin starred restaurants to serve a better steak than most steakhouses.

While steak may be a common order, I do have to agree in that its not exactly exciting and hardly challenges the skills of a top level chef etc.
I agree. But most of the really good steaks I've had, with the exception of Hawksmoor, have been at Michelin starred places. They generally have very high quality suppliers and chefs who know what they're doing. Most steakhouse, in my experience, have neither.
