What a ridiculous thing to say.
As someone who's lived down the road in Stockport (also a dump) for many years, I speak with some authority.Manchester is bettered in the dump stakes by only a few places...such as Bradford, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds.

I was at Michael Caine's place on Friday. Had the 8 course tasting menu with matched wines. Was a fantastic meal, but came to £150 each for the girlfriend and I.
+1Its a special place for special occasions so I would +1 this idea.
The tasting menus are excellent - some of the best food in the UK let alone Manchester.

Guys......
Thanks a lot for those recommendations.
I'm sure coming from St.Andrews, a relatively small town in Fife, Manchester will seem like a nice big city - I've never been - but I'm sure it'll be no dump. I like city breaks and all have their bad areas, I prefer spending my money in the UK.........nothing to do with a fear of flying.....honest !!
Thanks again all - I will look at all those.

If you end up in or near spinningfields, try and pop into elixir for pre-dinner drinks! Thanks a lot for those recommendations.

Can we have your brief reviews of the above mentioned restaurants then?
Sure."Located in a ghastly dump of a city, so I didn't even bother going in.
Hi there,
I am lucky to be able to have some of the city's best restaurants as customers of mine so hopefully the below should be of some use.
Rosso - Italian food, great ambience and some of the best cocktails in the city. Definitely one to check out.
The French - my personal favourite for the wow factor, recently refurbished so am just waiting to go back and give it another try.
Manchester House - it was ok, a little to showy for my liking and very expensive. Some of the dishes were superb though.
47 King St West - only a small restaurant but family owned and with a great chef it really is a little gem
Solita - as mentioned above a great experience for a true 'dirty' burger
Reds True BBQ - again a bit like Solita but their Doughnut Burger is a true experience
Mr Coopers - another from the Simon Rogan stable and almost as good as The French
Fazenda - a great concept and superb venue, certainly one to do at some point if you get chance
James Martin - ignore the fact its at the rear of the casino and its superb. Been a couple of times and have not been disappointed.
San Carlo Fumo - another Italian but a slightly different concept from the traditional San Carlo sites.
Personally I am looking forward to sampling Tattu, Hawksmoor, Iberica, Wahaca, and Asha's (when it opens in September).
Hope this helps.
Regards
Tim

Maybe you haven't been to the city for 'many years' - it's improved st loads whereas stockport (I was born there and lived there for 20 years) as even stter than it's ever been in every aspect.Manchester is bettered in the dump stakes by only a few places...such as Bradford, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds.

And if all fails just go to This and That...
FFS!!! It's 11:20am on a Wednesday, I'm feeling a bit peckish and someone on the internet mentions This and That. I absolutely guarantee I'll either be in there, "red chairs" or "green chairs" within the next hour. It's impossible to resist once the idea gets in my head. Rice and three with a chapati on the side, yum yum. Gassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
