Wouldn't mind getting some grub first, even something light!

Got some Octave samples to bring down too chaps and will rustle up a bottle of something interesting from the old collection :-p

How about Brew Wharf beforehand, as it's pretty much next door and the bar menu lists some nibbles?

http://www.brewwharf.com

And the beer selection is pretty good as well!!

Unfortunately I'm away on holiday or I'd be interested in booking 2 places to return a favour to a friend who treated me to a tasting evening at the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

One thing I wanted to ask there, but out of fear of making someone miss I didn't, could I have some ice? Oh the horror! Yes I may have a child like palate but it's the way I prefer to drink it. I made do with water at SMWS but is ice ever acceptable at these dos?

The effect ice has on an alcoholic drink is that it dulls the flavour. Cocktails use lots of ice because they were created by barmen in the prohibition era who needed to disguise the inferior alcohols used.
Of course the only right way to drink whisky is the way you like it. That said I think you would get a lot of strange looks if you asked for ice at a whisky tasting.
