I had my mum over earlier and offered her lunch before she left. She wanted both slices of bread buttering for her sandwiches and said it was the normal way to make them! I've NEVER buttered both slices of bread and even when I was a child and she made my sandwiches for me I swear she only buttered one slice, but she says she has always buttered both.

So who's right? What's the proper way to make sandwiches?

My reason is that for me, butter is just a way of making the filling stick to the bread a bit better instead of falling out and doesn't solve any other purpose. Also, if both slices were buttered then the taste would overpower what was in the sandwich. It's also healthier to only butter one slice (has to be the bottom slice too!).

got to butter both!

1. it tastes nice
2. it stops a "wet" filling making the bread go soggy. It is a sort of damp proof course in sandwich construction

I was always aware that it was for stopping moisture soaking into the bread.

Got to butter both slices.
And if they're going in the toastie maker, both sides of both slices get done.

Butter both sides.

When my mum used to make sandwiches in bulk she used to butter the end of the loaf before slicing. Dunno why, I guess it worked for her.

OP is odd. Both sides with proper butter.
Anything else is just wrong. Clearly.

I've always only buttered one slice, usually whilst ripping holes in the bread due to rock hard butter frown

As above, butter both slices.

This is something that really pisses me off about supermarket sandwiches as well as other cafes etc. as quite often the bread isn't buttered at all.

Is a buttie or a bap different to a sandwich?

I rarely have sandwiches but if I do I don't butter them, however I do spread Mayo on both sides if it is a savoury filling; cheese, ham, chicken etc, if it's a sweet filling such as marmalade, nutella, jam etc then no butter, just the filling.

Be it an actual sandwich or a roll I butter both sides. Always have always will. My brother is so against butter he takes them apart to 'clean' them of butter....dunno why.

If I was buttering then both sides. I mostly use mayo or other moist coating to bookend my sandwich though.
Oh and avoid rock hard butter by not keeping it in the fridge.

So you accept that your sandwiches are only half is structurally sound as they could be?

If you know it helps keep everything together why make a sandwich that half falls apart?

Decent mayonnaise as it's easier to spread without ripping the bread. I buy the polish stuff from morrisons.

How many people butter bacon or sausage sandwiches though? It seems weird to me, as I reckon there's enough fat there anyway, but I've seen some do it.
