Well their obvious stock response is we will take it up with the store. They didnt actually answer my question as to what it should actually be like.

Dear Craig,

They won't let me loose with a real email so I've copied and pasted this one instead.

Oh well. I still fancy a KFC though.
Oh it gets better. I responded with a "wtf kind of response is that?" email and I got a reply that said the ingredients and consistency of their gravy are a trade secret along with their 11 herbs and spices and as such they are unable to tell me what the consistency and colour should be or how it should taste!

hehe

The donner seems to be the 5lb containers. Didn't get the price but I might be able to sort some out for cheaper if anyone wants some.
Are you talking about the frozen pre-sliced (loose) donner or the pre-sliced block donner?

The stuff that was for sale in Venus was presliced loose. I can ask for a price on it either sliced or as a full elephant leg.

By Christ that was delicious.

The Best special is a foil tray filled with lamb and chicken donner, a kofte, a lamb shish and a chicken kebab.
I spec it for 100% lamb donner though - and no chicken donner.

however:

Me to Mrs Paolow:

What do you want for dinner?
I dont mind you choose.
Is there anything you dont want?
No - I'm happy with anything.

30 mins pass - ding dong.

Whats that youve got - donner?
Yeah.
Ugh.
What do you mean ugh? You said get anything?
Yeah but I didnt want donner meat.
FFS

Anyway - Plated up and she puts salt on it - WTF? Apparently she doesnt need kidneys.

Anyway this is it - we did two bowls like this:

And STILL had this left over!

Apologies for the salad but Ill be having the remainder for breakfast if that helps pull some man points back.
Also - apologies for the lack of the 'before' pictures - as soon as the doorbell went that was it - I was like one of the zombies out of 28 days later in my need for meat.

Time for some vodka and tonic and - for a slight change - some Anime while dinner goes down. No idea what Mrs Paolow is up to...

Oh, I ate all the lamb shish in this hit too - its buried under the leaves and doner meat - it doesnt reheat well.

Saturday night's dinner. Carbing up ahead of a run this morning.....
No gravy on the fish/batter? That's my only criticism and it's probably a contentious one.

Next year I will be flying back to Blighty; fish, chips, peas with gravy being one of the main lures.

On that subject, can any northern monkeys advise on the evolution or hopefully lack of in fish n chip terms?

I last had really good, greasy tasty chips, a good mix of soggy and crisp, probably 20 years ago up north, and regularly. About 15 years ago I lived down south and had chips from an allegedly really good chippy - it was nothing like I remembered. Dry, boring, and I never bothered again.

Subsequently I've only had Sydney fish and chips, which is highly regarded but to me just seems the same boring crap dry.

My question is whether there has been changes in oil/taste etc in the last 20 years up north? Hopefully I've just been in the wrong places.

My local fish n chips place, the fish are fabulous, cooked to order in beef dripping but the chips are terrible. They are greasy, pale and are not great, so I combine with chips and/or gravy/curry sauce from the nearby Chinese takeaway.

Best place up north (IMHO of course) is Seniors but there are plenty of others. My local does good quality stuff and is very busy - just not quite up to the same standard.

I have four to choose from within 2 sq miles. One is terrible so is avoided. The other three are sufficiently different and appeal at certain times.

One is good at combos and meal deals if you want a satisfying lunch. It isn't high quality. The next has been there for thirty years and even though it has changed ownership several times they still produce the same delicious soggy and crisp chips and savoury batter going.

The third is a huge takeaway restaurant in a renovated fire station. They cook in beef tallow. It smells lovely but sticks to your clothes. They're the best quality locally but if you eat a full portion solo it hits you hard. They produce fairly crisp chunky chips with good flavour.

Best fish n chips I ever had was in Hornsea, little East Coat Seaside town. (Twinned with the French town of La Grande Motte!) Cooked in Beef Dripping, (is that the same as Beef Tallow/) I know it always tastes better out of paper, looking at the sea, but this little family owned Chippie could teach Harry Ramsdens how to do it properly. Can't remember the name and don't even know if they're still going.
Have two local who are pretty good. Both use Beef Dripping, but still not as good as the Hornsea Chippie! I'm wanting Fish n Chips now with Mushy Peas, loads of salt and vinegar!!

I think most who claim beef dripping are using a mixture of that and veg of oil. Which is a good idea on many levels.
