One thing I've wondered recently, what happens with customs charges if you return from holiday with more than your duty free allowance and declare it?

I'm guessing you're charged duty per litre of alcohol (plus VAT I'd wager), then is that it? Does the retail value of the spirit come into it at all?
Depends how much over you are.
If it's only a bit you 99 times out of a hundred will be waved through (too much paperwork). If you don't declare and are caught, they will confiscate with an option to buy back (but not usually worth it).

If you are a lot over then you will be charged the duty and VAT if relevant (usually not if from the EU as VAT is already charged across the EU states at source).

I think he was asking if you declare it, not if you get caught sneaking through with some.

If you import from the EU it is regarded as taxed already. If it comes from outside the EU then you have to pay VAT as if it was bought in the UK and excise duty. It's £27.66 per pure litre of alcohol for spirits.

I thought so.

So lets say I buy a bourbon that's not available in the UK, a litre at 50% abv, with a retail value of £100 according to the receipt I kept and presented, I'd be charged 20% VAT on the sale price of the bottle, then £13.50ish in duty on top (plus VAT on the duty)?

Laphroaig 10 Year is on offer at Tesco - £28.00 a bottle.

My wife bought me a bottle even though she described it as smelling like sweaty socks left next to a bonfire!

Blimey, me again....

Tonight it's an Ileach cask strength Islay. No name Islay distillery, speculation it's either Lagavulin or Caol Ila, I'd guest the former. Very nice, it big, young and very powerful so needs a drop of water. Apparently got 97 points in the whisky bible... Good value imho.

Morrison have The Singleton Tailfire on offer for £25 just now.

It's not one I've tried before, but it's a nice drink. I think I'll buy another bottle to add to the cupboard at that price.

Tried it straight out of the bottle and then with a drop of water, much prefer it with water...............rich and creamy perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

Having this today. Have to say I am really enjoying it, although I would use my money elsewhere at current prices (although it is pretty good value considering most Karuizawa prices)!

First time i've had Glenfarclas..................mmmmm up there with some of my favourites for sure.
I've seen that some of the reviews say that the 15 yr old is much heavier sherried than the 17 yr old,
has anyone on here tried both.
