Yamazaki 18... been offered 2 bottles at £225 each. Looks hard to come by for cheaper than about £300. Wonder if it might appreciate a bit further as it's a serial gold medal winner, and I think now hard to come by...
How much would it need to appreciate before you could actually sell it and make a reasonable return after fees/commissions and so on?I really like the Yamazaki 18, though I appreciate it's a bit subtle for some. I got a bottle at £115 and would say that was fair. £225 is too far for me, but then that seems to be the world we're in.
That said, I also wouldn't be surprised if Suntory are ramping up production and by the time the fashion passes they'll be knee deep in the stuff and the prices will return. I hope.
I am wondering about putting my pair of Yamazaki and Hakushu 10 year olds up for sale... Any one got any recent sale prices? Both UK marked bottles, Morrison Bowmore.

Just had a quick check - seems to be between £100-150 for the Yamazaki 10, and £75-130 for the Hakushu 10. Absolute madness IMO!Regarding the Yamazaki 18 - ScotchWhiskyAuctions charge 10% commission and it's 5% at Whiskyauctioneer. Both also add £3 per bottle, plus £4 if you want a reserve price. Whiskyauctioneer shows Yamazaki 18 from £245 to 280 in the last auction. So at 5% on 225 plus £3 you'd probably make between £10 to 45 if you flipped it straight away. Note the Yoichi 20yo bottles go for £350-500, although it is more stable in the high 300's recently. The 15yo has started moving from a steady £130 to nearer £160 (sadly as I love it)! So the Yamazaki 18 may have a little space to climb still?
I don't see it being too dangerous that it drops a lot in the next few years since it will take a long time to react to the increased demand, so particularly for the older whiskies it will take time to increase production. However say from maybe 2020 I would guess there will be a big flood of Japanese whisky from Nikka and Suntory once they react to this demand spike. It also benefits Nikka and Suntory to not release a lot now as they can increase the cost of their bottles and so make more profit without actually investing any more money.
I also don't see it as bad flipping these bottles, because at current prices it is collectors as no one will pay that for drinking it unless they have a huge amount of disposable income anyway!
I'd guess the main risk to whisky collecting (for money) is when the world economy stabilises and people go back to getting interest in the bank. Then cars, whiskies etc will get a bit of a negative shock. But there is also an upside if India gets into single malt in a big way - add potentially a billion people (even a small percentage of that is a lot of people) and it could make it very hard to get special bottles! It's why I am trying to increase my collection of some relatively older bottles with age statements - seems like a lot of special editions these days are not that special, and generally people say modern Scotch whisky is not as good as it used to be. More focus on quantity over quality I guess!
Best finish up my rambling now, :P

interesting info there thanks. Asian continent still loves blends!! I once heard that most whisky purchasing in India is for the large weddings which are more commonplace, where there are many bottles provided per table, and most of it doesn't get drunk so is given away. Interesting thing.

Yes, that's what I have heard too. So if it does change into a desire for single malts then it's going to make the high prices now seem like a bargin! All of the above could just be nonsense btw - just my thoughts from bits and pieces I have read, and what seems to happen in economic cycles.
I've noticed a trend that often for the more "common" collectible bottles a lot of the same bottle appear at one auction, which depresses the price for that auction. Means you can pick up a bottle relatively cheaply when buying, but its bad if you are selling. Often the next auction will then have perhaps 1 bottle of that type, and goes for a high price. Something to think about. I'm pretty new to auctions, but seems like patience and setting a spend limit is the trick. For example I was lucky enough to get a Mars The Revival 2011 Komagatake (the first bottle from the distillery after it reopened) for £65 in the last auction, when previously it's never been below £110 or so. But you do see some bottles going for over the prices they are selling currently in shops too! I had hoped to get lucky picking up some other Mars bottles cheaply this month as I noticed they changed the search name from Mars to only Komagatake, but seems some others noticed it too with the prices,
P.S. Just noticed the Yoichi 20's in this auction are now at £410+ and still a few days to go so seems they may be as volatile as ever in the £360-500 range!
Hi there,
Watching this thread with interest. Given my day job we hold very good stocks of most Japanese Whiskies, we have healthy stocks of Yamazaki 18 and are just sitting on it for a while to see how the market goes.
It has currently been removed from our price list and we will pop it back on once the market finds its feet.
Wanted to share these as this is just a few pics of the bits and bobs I have worked with over the last week or so.
Glen Grant 40yo. We bought a couple of these but have opened one for any special customers who visit us at the office. Its a lovely dram and not to wooded despite the age.
Yesterdays sampling session with the Gordon and Macphail rep. The 1951 and 52 were heavily wooded and felt almost like a red wine with really heavy tannins. I really liked them but my MD was not so sure.
A firm favourite and one my MD is a huge fan of
Was really looking forward to this having been born in 1974, it didn't disappoint.
Just an average day in the office
Lastly not one I have tried but we have just sold one of these for £1500, we have more of this in stock but that price seems to be about right.
Hope you like the pics.
Regards
Tim

I'd be interested to hear what you think of it as the gimmicky marketing put me off a bit.

I intend to open it tonight, so will post later.I'd be interested to hear what you think of it as the gimmicky marketing put me off a bit.
The label sends you to a microsite, which has videos on how to understand the flavor profile of the whisky. It starts with the nose, but cracking open a bottle of scotch in the office, at lunchtime, seems to be frowned upon in my line of work if you don't intend to share it.

Did anyone enter the ballot for the 2016 Laphroaig Cairdeas?
Yes, entered for 2 bottles. Not going to win it though - think the last time I won a competition was when I was 12, and that was winning a bottle of Pina Colada which I wasn't allowed to claim because of my age! NRS said:
