We've amounted quite a few recently. Now looks something like this:

Talisker Skye (in the sail bag)
Glen Dronach 15
Glenrothes (Select Reserve IIRC)
Glenlivet 12
Glen Scotia 10

The Skye is practically gone and has been a favourite of mine. Not keen on the Glen Dronach which has been there some time now, but then I've not been a fan of any Highland ones I've tried tbh. The Glenrothes is nice enough. Glenlivet is the wife's and not had any.

The Glen Scotia is lovely stuff. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of their offerings. Sort of halfway between a Speyside and Islay to my amateur tastebuds. Think sea-saltiness of Bowmore meets creaminess of Aberlour.

Picked a 1L bottle of Dalmore 15 in the canary islands for the grand price of €48.

Unfortunately I don't have much room in my suitcase or I'd bring back a few interesting bottles.

Do you have a Glencairn glass ? If not, get a small wine glass (my standard request in a bar which only has tumblers (and ice)). Pour a small measure - then take the dog for a walk around the block - if you don't have a dog go and clean the glass on your car.
Then take a quiet comfortable seat. Roll it around the glass and nose it - gently. Then sip small amounts - let it roll around your mouth a good few times - hold it there - then swallow.
If that doesn't work please package it carefully and deliver to 16 Chan.....

Keep the bottle upright or you will damage the cork ;-)

Looking at the fill level it's in a centrifuge, so might be ok anyway? spin

Hi there,

I was lucky enough to do a tasting with a friend of mine who is the Mackmyra brand ambassador for the UK.
We only currently stock the standard one but some of the other expressions are superb.

The Blomstertid is superb, the cherry wine casks certainly add great flavour to the liquid.

The distillery has an interesting story as well with it being gravity fed.

He some pics of the range we sampled.

Regards

Tim
Sounds great, and looks a good tasting! What's your favourite? How did you find the Moment bottles compared to the "standard" bottles? On my trip I tried a few in a bar. All of them were typical Mackmyra, but a little different depending on the finish. Moment 5 was a bit more fruity (Ligonberry wine finished) and Moment 10 was simple to the bottle of Iskrystall I bought before (a bit more coffee on the nose). The Första Utgåvan (first general release) was more similar to Moment 10, but a bit rougher, which is to be expected. I have to say I generally really enjoy Mackmyra whiskies, but had been hoping for a little more variation between the different finishes. Perhaps this will happen more when the range gets a bit older?

Also had some Jura Superstition a few nights of the trip, and bought these two as expected with the cheaper prices across the border.

Anybody have any recommendations for whiskies to pick up from Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg or Bruichladdich distilleries?

biggrin

I would have thought you might like some of the Bruichladdich Valinchs Mr Trophy, since some of them are single sherry casks?

Which could be a recommendation for something to pick up at Bruichladdich - check if they have any Valinchs since they are distillery-only releases. I'd generally aim to get those types of bottles when visiting, since you can get the standard bottles at home anyway. No idea on the varying quality/ tastes though for the releases they have now though, and I don't think anyone here has been to visit any of them for a while so maybe google is best if you do want to check their current releases? Or just a lot of tasting on the visit, hehe

Opened Bruichladdichs 2012 Feis Ile bottling last Friday to drink with friends. Finished it this past Friday with other friends.

I knew I should have bought two bottles at the time. Lovely lovely stuff.

Gone but not forgotten.

Just can't find the taste for any of them at all! I've heard the old Ardbeg stuff is cracking but everytime I smell the smoke, that's enough for me!

I can understand that, but I think quite a few of the Bruichladdichs are not really peaty though, since they have the Octomore and Port Charlotte brands? Some of the older Valinchs seem to be pretty big on sherry and bourbon flavours from what I understand. I have one at a family member's house to pick up at some point to try it.

Been on Islay since Sunday. Had a tour around Ardbeg today, superb, really recommend it. Ended up with a bottle of Supernova and Dark Cove as I'd been meaning to pick them up anyway and they gave me a nice discount.

Other than that, we've noticed the distillery prices are the same as Internet prices at best, sometimes even more expensive (looking at you, Bowmore).

Bruichladdich tomorrow, I'll have a look out for the Valinches, thanks.

The Bruichladdich warehouse tasting was both a blessing and a curse. Three incredibly nice drams (straight from the cask, all no longer available), which ruined us for any of their standard offerings! They had a 13 (or 30 - didn't quite hear) sherry cask Port Charlotte that was possibly the nicest whisky I've ever tasted. Just the right blend of lovely nose, fruits, spices, smoke, peat and smoothness.

+1 I was disappointed to find the bottle of Talisker I'd bought at the distillery selling for less in supermarkets. Not a good sign I say. They've zero transportation and stocking costs.
