yes, when abroad we try and hit the best steakhouses about, has to be done when visiting the USA.
Interesting- posted before that Keens was terrible when we went. Sent steaks back several times as it was overcooked - then they left sidedishes on table to get cold - before we asked for some hot ones. Steak was OK and nothing remarkable at all. Staff did not seem to care either, that's my lasting memory of the place. Like many NYC restaurants you have to book a long time in advance - so wonder if they get complacent as mostly full many lunches and evenings. I wouldn't recommend Keens to anyone. I'll have to check with colleagues in Manhattan as to which restaurant they favour at the moment for a great steak.
In fact, i cannot remember having a truly great steak in the US. Their beef is overrated in my view. Had some phenomenal Argentinian steaks, great Brazilians barbecues, best steak i've ever eaten was in Dubai (at an Argentinian restaurant). Plenty of UK restaurants with Scottish or Herefordshire beef were far better than i remember US steaks tasting. When i go to NYC now i deliberately don't do steak houses. So much choice there- it's a bit boring anyway! Or Fade St social in Dublin - now the Irish beef there is incredible.
My company likes to go to S&W for meetings quite often - and you cannot fault the aged texture of their meat- it's very tender, but it just doesn't taste that amazing.
I tend to go for Rib-eye to get the flavour but do enjoy a good fillet. Have had Chateaubriand at Raymond Blancs brasseries a few times- that has been consistently delicious, well cooked and great service. I've been to Hawksmoor once - great food but you don't feel like you get great value.

upstairs at the grill is by far the best steak place we have been to outside of the US, way better than hawksmoor or gaucho or cau locally. Up there with Lugers, Berns or Keens.Mr Roper said:

Had a pretty similar experience at Keens. Massively overrated. Staff did not seem to care either, that's my lasting memory of the place. Interesting you mention this, I'd swear they were lacing it with crack when I was there.Just the best. "I want, nay need more steak" I've ever eaten - absolutely out of this world.
I was only there working for a week (WRC), and of the crew that were eating steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner and perhaps a 3am snack, all of us reported miserable depression for a few weeks on return to the UK. We'd all done long haul to other places, but the return/come-down from Argentina was really bad.
With out doubt the best most yummy steak I've ever eaten.

They served you steaks on a slab of wood? No thanks
Possibly because it wouldn't fit a normal dinner plate? My wife's meal was on a standard looking plate.I remember they had to butterfly it to reduce cooking time, but I can't remember how much of this I'd already eaten at this point.
STK in Vegas was ok I seem to remember, although my memory is a little hazy due to the copious amounts of booze consumed.

If anyone is ever in Bournemouth, you need to try the Bournemouth Steak House, horrible looking little place in a not so upmarket part of town which has been going for years.
Walking in is like stepping back in time to the 1980's, however the steaks are utterly fantastic, and I've eaten a lot of steak.

Went to M&C in Bromley at the weekend, and have been to the one in Reading a couple of times. Always decent food and service and, in terms of value for money, I can't fault them. Which is in contrast to Gaucho (London Bridge) which, although all very decent, was not worth the 3x per person we paid over M&C.
Went to their new one in Bagshot last night. It was a refurbed Harvester so after this thread i was prepared for it to be no more than average.
It was bloody good.
I know it's easy for a restaurant to be good once so another try will obviously happen before i can make any proper claims, but a decent steak, well cooked, my friend said hers was perfect (and she does like to fuss), friendly staff and all in all more than happy with the price to quality ratio.

Well the food wasn't too bad and the bill only came to £35pp inc drinks
Only....the service was shocking! Not the girls serving but despite booking the table we turned up on time and it was a good 30 mins before it was ready for us...then they seemed to forget various bits of our order, requiring regular prompting, culminating in them forgetting my baileys coffee altogether.
As a cheapish steak dinner it wasn't too bad but they really need to improve the service levels (and the coffee looked like instant!)

The problem they have outside the M25 is that it isn't a cheapish steak dinner and then inside the M25 it doesn't compete well with the more expensive options other than on price aloneGassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
