Our nearest used to be a Beefeater which closed, had a lick of paint and re-opened as an M&C. Only the prices appeared to have changed (upwards!).
They did the same to me round here in Essex.

fkers because I liked the beefeater hehe

I've been to the Bromley one which used to be a carvery called the Pickhurst. It was ok. Nothing particularly special and a bit strong on prices.

I really want to try Hawksmoor, I work reasonably close but a colleague went and didn't rate the steaks well. They loved the mac a cheese and one the puddings. Still want to give it a go.
There was nothing really wrong with the steaks at Hawksmoor when I went, just overpriced for what didn't seem to be any better quality than any other decent steak place. Cau has a spiral cut 500g rib eye done in Chimichurri which I love, but that may just be because I tend to prefer interesting flavoured / spiced food.
Even at Hawksmoor they don't seem to grasp the American technique of using thick prime cuts and broilering on both sides at once to get the perfect charred outside and rare middle. It's so hard to find in the UK. I had a steak at Blumenthals pub recently at some outrageous price and it was absolutely crap

Good steak in south London / north Kent is not easy to find.so much so I now cook it at home...
I grew up in forest hill and now live in wilmington.english restaurants and hard to get right it seems. If I eat out now its gbk for a burger , or a takeaway Chinese from my old favourite , the eastern queen in catford. Or with the kids a mcd's or Nandos....

Ive been to the Bromley M & C a few times (my wife loves steak - I'm ok with a good steak but so many aren't that I am less interested to try steakhouses than she is). The steak is pretty good, the starters are rubbish. If you live around South London then 'Branded' in Beckenham is a sure bet. All excellently presented and proper tasty.

M&C is pretty average fayre, to be perfectly honest. It's a chain owned by the same people who own All Bar One, so it's not the kind of place that focuses on high quality produce. You're better off looking for a decent (gastro)pub somewhere out of town, as the choice in/around Bromley is pretty chain-/mainstream-orientated.

Hawksmoor is utterly sublime. Excellent meat, well cooked, with fantastic choice of sides - probably the best steak I've had in London (although the Porterhouse at Social Eating House came close).

Also in Beckenham!

Glad I've found this thread, as been thinking about visiting the local M&C too.

Have you got a CAU near you?

Blackheath is probably the closest to Bromley.
Please don't sully a proper steak joint with the name CAU. It's nothing special. They don't even know how to get a steak right.

Goodmans has never disappointed. Goucho is good too, the canary wharf one at least. I'm still laughing about Cau, st meat, tiny portion, they don't even sell fillet.

Goodmans is my go to when I take clients out for steak in London. It's also a lot more laid back than Gaucho.

The staff know how to treat people very well. I was so impressed by the waiter we had a couple of visits ago. Too full to eat pudding he managed to extract what we would have chosen, brought them out as served in the restaurant and told us to take the bowls/plate and cutlery back to our hotel. The sides such as the tempura shrimp are great. The people working their love their job, it shows.

There's one fairly local to me and the steaks are no better than the 2 for 1 places and generally they don't cook them correctly. I find Wetherspoons to be of the same standard with more consistent cooking!

well there you have it. Goodmans which consistently ranks top few steak restaurants in the UK is no better than a 2 for 1 at a pub chain. Given your only other culinary contributions have been limited to the 'Dirty Takeaway' thread.......

Perhaps other Cau venues are not as good, but the one in Wilmslow has been excellent the 3 times I've been.
