Goodmans has never disappointed. Goucho is good too, the canary wharf one at least. I'm still laughing about Cau, st meat, tiny portion, they don't even sell fillet.
Perhaps other Cau venues are not as good, but the one in Wilmslow has been excellent the 3 times I've been.
I would very much agree with you that the specific chef/staff make all the difference. Ive been to the one in Guildford twice. I gave them a second chance. It always amazes me that when i cook my steak at home, maybe 4 times a year, its a proper 300g, 3 inch thick fillet. It's perfect. Yet Cau Guildford , who must cook hundreds a day can get it so wrong. Med rare coming out well done is not on.

Went to the newly opened branch in Glasgow this week. Decent prices considering it includes chips, choice of sauce and salad. It was lunch time so I ordered a side of wings from the lunch menu at £3.00 which were really good value and tasty.
I ordered fillet on the bone for a main, again it was good but I normally order Entrecôte on the bone. I got a bit excited and ordered the wrong thing rolleyes .
Salad consisted of quarter of a sliced iceberg with mayo and croutons which was good. Onion bread again good but not what I expected and a pepper sauce again really nice. My son ordered the fillet with beef with beef dripping sauce which I was not keen on.
Think it was £7 - £8 cheaper for a main course than my favorite steak restaurant in Glasgow (the butcher shop) but need to give it another go with an Entrecôte.

Have you got a CAU near you?

Blackheath is probably the closest to Bromley.
Please don't sully a proper steak joint with the name CAU. It's nothing special. They don't even know how to get a steak right.
Hell's teeth. I only asked him if he had one near by, as it might be a suitable and possibly slightly superior option to M&C. My local one is decent and better than M&C, anyway.

We can't all dine at Hawksmoor or the Groucho Club.

The snobbery around charred cow's arse is baffling sometimes.

I fancy a steak so was looking for a steak restaurant locally. I found http://www.millerandcarter.co.uk/ which looks to have branches all over the place. Anyone been, any recommendations? I had a look on trip advisor in respect of my local branch and seems favourable.
I've eaten in my local one 3 times. Once it was great, twice it was very bad. Hopefully you'll get it on a good day hehe
The first reply mirrored my own experience exactly.

I'm with the Goodmans fans: always had a really good meal there - not just the food but the staff are excellent, and the wine list decent.

I can also highly recommend Mashsteak in Soho.

Went to Hawksmoor last night - it was good, but not as good as the last time I went. Sides stood out more than the steak (which was overcooked).

I'm another of the Goodmans fans. Have been twice and it was great both times.

Gaucho's OK (my other half likes it a lot) but not a patch on Goodmans IMO.

At those prices and given they are a specialist steak house I would send back any steak not cooked right.

Have eaten at Miller & Carter in Bath and Cardiff and found both to be distinctively average, would probably compare them with a Beefeater but significantly more expensive. Considering they are owned by the same company that owns Harvester, Toby Carvery and Crown Carveries I guess you shouldn't really expect too much.

Ordinarily I agree with you, but when eating with two others and it not being the biggest food problem in the universe I decided not to.

The steaks were also a good bit cheaper than I remember them being the last time I went (not that that is any excuse for them cooking a steak medium when asked for medium rare).

Not really snobbery, just a fact that if you go to any of the good London steakhouses you will have as a good a steak as you get anywhere in the world, and amazing sides. Goodman's truffle mac n cheese anyone?

You could easily cook yourself an equally good steak at home though.

I visit Goodmans - City mostly but occasionally Canary Wharf - a few times a year, and although the visits aren't cheap, I never begrudge paying the bill; the food is outstanding as is the service. I haven't been back to Gaucho or Hawksmoor since I discovered Goodmans a few years ago.

Booked in, 2 weeks tomorrow at CW branch. Already selected the food. Tempura prawns to start, T Bone with various sides. If I can move i'll have a spot of cheese smile

Can't say I've tried them. What really grates is the hilton just next door used to be 150 notes max mid week. Try 299.

You cant really compare Miller and Carter to places like Hawksmoore and Goodmans though can you. The price difference is substantial. Personally my problem with most steak houses and this includes the London set is that the meat is usually great but the sides are crap. The best place I have found for real quality sides is MASH

M&C prices aren't at Ye Old Beefeater and Brewers Fayre levels. They're certainly nudging the smarter London places in ripoff pricing for meat

I dont think so.....

M&C - 12oz ribeye £20.95 including fries, onion loaf, tomato, lettuce wedge and steak sauce
Hawksmoor - 400g ribeye £31.00 fries 4.25 sauce 3.00 average side 4.50 = £42.75
Goodmans = 400g ribeye £34.00 sauce inc fries 5.00 average side 5.00 = £44.00
MASH = 400g ribeye £37.00 sauce 2.50 fries 4.50 average side 4.50 = £48.50
Smith and Wollensky = 400g ribeye £42.00 fries 4.00 sauce 4.00 average side 5.00 =£45.00
Gauch = 400g ribeye £31.00 sauce £3.00 fries £5.00 average side £5.00 = £44.00

OK so the london steaks quoted are 15% larger than the M&C steak but the average price difference means the M&C meal is 47% of the cost of a London steakhouse meal. Almost 2 for 1

Agreed. M&C fill the gap between the places you've mentioned and your Harvester/Beefeater type pub restaurant. Both in price and quality.

A ripoff you say. I'm not saying it's cheap but reasonable IMO. Take Goodmans CW. Do you have any idea what their costs are. Huge. Try 30k a month in non staff overheads. The fit out must be 1.5m. The staff will be well paid because they are excellent.

The one in Wilmslow where I work is utter st. Cau on the other hand (in Wilmsloe) I rate above the Hawksmoor and Gaucho in Manchester
I really want to try Hawksmoor, I work reasonably close but a colleague went and didn't rate the steaks well. They loved the mac a cheese and one the puddings. Still want to give it a go.
Comparing Cau to Hawksmoor makes me want to cry a little. Cau is not even in the same league as Hawksmoor. It's an average chain restaurant with ideas above its station. Hawksmoor is the best steak in London.
