The one in Wilmslow where I work is utter st. Cau on the other hand (in Wilmsloe) I rate above the Hawksmoor and Gaucho in Manchester
I really want to try Hawksmoor, I work reasonably close but a colleague went and didn't rate the steaks well. They loved the mac a cheese and one the puddings. Still want to give it a go.
Comparing Cau to Hawksmoor makes me want to cry a little. Cau is not even in the same league as Hawksmoor. It's an average chain restaurant with ideas above its station. Hawksmoor is the best steak in London.
Cau is awful, I had the misfortune of going to the one in St Katherines Dock.

Goodman is better than Hawksmoor wink
Only tried Goodman once so don't have as much reference! It was easily as good as Hawksmoor though.

Hawksmoor has always been excellent and wifey likes the cocktails!

M&C prices aren't at Ye Old Beefeater and Brewers Fayre levels. They're certainly nudging the smarter London places in ripoff pricing for meat
A ripoff you say. I'm not saying it's cheap but reasonable IMO. Take Goodmans CW. Do you have any idea what their costs are. Huge. Try 30k a month in non staff overheads. The fit out must be 1.5m. The staff will be well paid because they are excellent.
I don't know. Maybe Peter Luger in Brooklyn spoiled me. I just find much of British steak offerings underwhelming. Goodmans is pretty good I'll admit. Hawksmoor middling. Blumenthal was rubbish

This proves everyones experiences are different. I too have been to Peter Luger in NY. The guy who arranged it raved about the place to the point of being annoying. I thought it ok, Gaucho quality. Goodmans in my opinion is better. The staff at PL also think they are something special. The reality did not match the hype. I am at Goodmans on Wednesday, i will report back

and another thing i remember about Peter Luger. They do not accept credit cards of any kind-cash only for foreigners. we were sent to an ATM FFS. Id never go back. What kind of restaurant, ones that charge premium rates where the Bill could be significant, only takes US debit cards and cash.

This is what a £27 steak gets you in M&C. Cold, greasy and in all honesty if I wasn't starving because of the 1 hour wait, I would have returned it back.

Wow...that M&C looks crap. The few times I have had it in Ruislip it looked far better and tasted amazing.

Hawksmoor - 400g ribeye £31.00 fries 4.25 sauce 3.00 average side 4.50 = £42.75

MASH = 400g ribeye £37.00 sauce 2.50 fries 4.50 average side 4.50 = £48.50
Smith and Wollensky = 400g ribeye £42.00 fries 4.00 sauce 4.00 average side 5.00 =£45.00

And this is why I don't go out to steakhouses in the UK. For those steak prices I can buy a 2kg rib roast, cut it into 5 steaks, and cook them exactly to my tastes. Why spend £30+ on a mediocre steak when I can have 5 steaks done to perfection at home for the same cost?

People like going out to eat and getting someone else to cook their meal and do the washing up. Around my way you can get pretty much any kind of food delivered to your door. But the restaurants still survive because people visit them.

Completely agree. If i'm spending £50 on a main course I want to eat something that i couldn't very easily cook myself - and frankly short of toast nothing is easier to cook than a steak.

I don't disagree which is why I said earlier in the thread that I generally have issues with London steakhouses being all about the meat and the sides and the rest not bring great. When j go out to eat I go to eat stuff that it's not easy for me / cost effective / possible For me to create at home as well as the social experience. My only swerve from that is when it's on expenses and that's when I generally eat steak because I'm eating out 3-4 nights a week

You're absolutely right, and yet I can't resist a good steak restaurant...and often leave it after dinner thinking exactly what you just said. One day I'll learn!

Here's a rib-eye (on the bone) from a previous visit - always outstanding.

here we go- Porterhouse 600g

This was very good but half the size it used to be which is a bit naughty considering it's £12 (3 king prawns).

Why does a piece of steak always command such a ridiculous price? I ate at a country pub last weekend and it was £22.
For that I would want something outstanding, but all I got was an average quality 8oz of beef, veg, chips n gravy. The total cost of ingredients to them must be about £5.

if you want a decent quality steak in London but don't want to pay through the nose give http://flatironsteak.co.uk/ a try not the quality or ambiance of a goodmans / hawksmore but it pisses on a pub stake or any other chain restaurant steak and a third of the price.

Flat iron is brilliant, but, the one I went to (think they have 2 now) only had space for about 25 covers. Without being able to book a table you're often waiting for hours for your meal.

I've said it before but the best steak I've had in London was at tramshed in Hoxton. (Hixter backside and city) were also good and same chain I believe - far cheaper than goodmans and similar quality IMO
