Prefer Schweppes with almost every Gin. Have tried fever tree loads of times and definitely think it's the fancy bottle "premium" factor that has made it popular. Most gin experts are now over the whole "premium" tonic thing and back to serving Schweppes too.

Brockmans, slice of pink grapefruit and Schweppes for me.
YES!!!!! But with Schweppes ginger ale. My favourite right now.

Hi there,

My day job is in the wine and spirits industry. The company I work for has never traditionally sold soft drinks, but with over 250 gins in our range now we have had to up our tonic offering.
We currently sell:-

1724 (my personal favourite)
Originals ( in a choice of classic, yuzu, berries, citrus or cherry)
East Imperial Burma Tonic
Indi (available in normal or as a lemon tonic)
Thomas Henry (in classic, elderflower, grapefruit or cherry blossom)
Peter Spanton (in cardamom, lemongrass, classic London or chocolate/mint)
Bottle green (in classic, light, elderflower or pomegranate)
6 o'clock
BTW (Bermondsey Tonic Water)

We will also shortly be adding the range from Double Dutch and Ledgers.

If you love your gin, look outside the Schweppes, Britvic, Fevertree and Fentimans offerings, you will be pleasantly surprised at what's out there.

Regards

Tim

I must admit I do like Fever Tree, Fentimans and East Imperial tonics. Waitrose own brand tonic is an acceptable substitute. If I recall the subject of tonic use came up at the Ginstitute and these were the recommendations but it was more along the lines of get a 'full fat' tonic as opposed to any of the diet stuff.

A particular favourite at the moment is a glass of Gin Mare with Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic.

But WTF is it with British full fat Schweppes having saccharin in it? Gives it a horrible aftertaste. I seem to recall the only unsullied ones were Waitrose own brand and fever tree.
Never noticed it myself...
I'm sure most people haven't - it's probably been that way for years and everyone's become conditioned to it. However, it's blatantly obvious when you come from somewhere where it's made without saccharin.
I could tell when they switched to using it and it wasn't that long ago. I've long since disliked artificial sweeteners so always kept a lookout for them.

Schweppes was a reliable choice until recently. So it's Waitrose only for us now.

Thanks to prats like Jamie Oliver, unsullied sugary soft drinks are also becoming a rarity.

The Schweppes Premium Tonics are delicate but delicious and strangely have limited availability in the UK.

Schweppes Ginger and Cardamom tonic and Hendricks is unbeatable.

Wouldn't call myself an expert, and I like fever tree...but for the cost, I'm back on Schweppes. I will however avoid Canada Dry Tonic water like the plague. Vile ste.

I tend to find that all the big brand tonics and ginger beers taste of artificial sweeteners over anything else so that's why I get the nicer stuff. Fever Tree for tonic and Fentimans for ginger beer.

I like Schweppes , don't really rate Fever Tree, hate Britvic because it is never fizzy enough and would recommend everybody tries Fentmans at least once. It won't be to everyones taste but it is certainly different than most tonics.Very heavy on the quinine

When I went to Madrid they had a mental amount of different tonics you could chose from, all Schwepps too, wonder why most are not over here!

I agree.

Do people really prefer Schweppes to Fevertree light tonic?

The Schweppes is very 'artificial' in taste, by comparison.

For those on a budget both Sainsbury's and Waitrose do proper sugar, sweetener free, tonic water. Personally I prefer Sainsbury's as it's a little punchier and less sweet. 40p/litre for Sainsbury's or 50p/l for Waitrose
