Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has tried this? I have a day off tomorrow, i have 1kg of good quality cubed beef from a decent butchers and lots of onions to use up. I'm wondering if it's possible to start on the hob for an hour or so then transfer to a slow cooker? I'm concerned it might significantly alter the end product if i do? Any thoughts from the forum would be appreciated.

biggrin

OP: Starting on the hob wouldn't be a problem as long as you don't let the onions brown too much. Might give that one a go myself. Looks like a good winter dish, perfect for this week frown

Thanks for the tip 21TonyK.

Might give it two hours on the hob to sweat a decent amount of liquid out of the onions. Then transfer to the slow cooker for around 6 hours so i can go out. When I return i think i might transfer back to the pot on the hob and reduce the liquid on a low to medium heat for an hour.

As i said in the OP i will be doing this tomorrow so i will try and add some pictures and will let you all know what its like.

Will do the same myself in next couple of days. Another recipe includes a glass of white wine at the beginning which I might change to red wink

Tip.... trust the recipe... use all the onions.

I used probably 3/4s and the mix isnt quite right.... still tasty though.

Good idea. Or I might do the 'Ethicurian Lamb Shoulder" which is fantastic if you have not done it.

Hmm, will look at that.

My recent favourite is this - lamb cooked over beans.

Love the fact you tried it so soon after I posted it. Mine is still in the slow cooker as i had to go out in the end until early afternoon. It will be finished shortly then eaten tomorrow. Have got pictures so will post once it's finished.

Did this the other day as per youtube.

Perfectly "nice" but TBH not something I would bother with again. No real flavour other than onions and beef. Surprising as that's all that's in it wink

Have to admit I tasted it after 8 hours in the slow cooker and added a few bits to try to improve it without turning it into a boeuf bourguignon but even that was a bit of a waste of effort. Ended up leaving it for 24+ hours.

Maybe I should have picked up on the point about it being like "onion soup" and actually made a decent onion soup and added the beef etc

Oh well, worth a try.
