What's happened to M&S chocolate?
Discussion
I discovered it a year or two back - the milk chocolate was the best, far better than green and black's, hotel chocolat etc.
But I went to top up at the weekend and it's all changed. They now have some kind of cardboard wrapper - I hoped it was just a packaging change but sadly not. The milk (70%) was horrible.
Bring back the old stuff!
Waitrose 1 was on offer last month and wasn't bad - a definite second place, but much better than the current range. So unless this is temporary it seems I'll have to protest by buying my chocolate there.

Toblerone and Cadbury's are owned by Mondelez, as are Terry's.
M&S don't make stuff, they just sell it so.....?
I gave up on Cadbury's years ago, and that was before the takeover.
Yes, not sure who actually makes it but it was a clear winner in my view. The new stuff... Isn't.M&S don't make stuff, they just sell it so.....?

I'm pretty sure that Thornton's make M&S stuff.
I refuse to purchase any chocolate that Kraft have fked up.
Lidl and Aldi sell the best chocolate and I like Milka.
Erm, have you checked who owns Milka?I refuse to purchase any chocolate that Kraft have fked up.

It looks like it's time to drop that as well.
I bloody loved the one with rice Krispies in it.
Edit... No I'm safe, Crunch is a Nestlé product.

Generally agreed apart from odd details. Refuse to buy any chocolate produced by company run by lizards, thus no Cadbury, Toblerone, Milka etc.I refuse to purchase any chocolate that Kraft have fked up.

Lidl sells surprisingly good chocolate, though they've gone down imo since ditching Ritter and bringing in spawn of the devil lizards Cadbury. One benefit is that now eat less chocolate.
Heard on Friday that they're buggering around with KitKats now, apparently some new sugar derivative which means a new recipe. KitKats were one of the products that still tasted like it did when we were kids.

Milka was better when you couldn't get it in the UK. It was a foreign treat and it was delicious. These days, it's still head and shoulders above Cackburys but it's not as good as it was. I note that the bars these days have the appearance of a polished sheen whereas they used to appear quite flat. I suppose they contain more oil these days. On the subject of M and S chocolate, I still like it but I tend only to have the hazlenut blended bars.
I used to work for Thorntons back in the day. I knew the range like the back of my hand as I was the store's top salesman (I even got to wear black trousers!). I recall reading up on the products and seeing that the Thorntons range contained more cocoa butter than the usual high street tat. The Thorntons chocolates didn't appear to be varnished, and they melt at a lower temperature with a creamier texture because of the cocoa butter content. Cheaper st is made by replacing the cocoa butter with vegetable oils, which produces that hard, tasteless chocolate that barely melts as you eat it. Good chocolate can also sweat cocoa butter if the ambient temperature around it fluctuates.

It's probably relevant to the council thread, but Cadbury's dairy milk seems to have changed lately.
It tastes over so slightly more bitter.
I wonder if this is due to the company having different owners now. American chocolate is generally more bitter.
Yep, more bitter due to them using Butyric Acid in the recipe. Which is the same acid that makes puke taste and smell like puke. NICE!It tastes over so slightly more bitter.

The M&S bars are made by Thorntons and, like Cadburys, their products have gone down hill recently as part of their cost saving programme. Good chocolate is really hard to find these days. Montezumas is my go to brand now.
