I assume all the SE Asian places are off the agenda given they're mostly fish.

If not, roka is good. Table at the bar overlooking the grills is cool. It's not a quiet place but still quite romantic because you sit next to each other at the bar

I would advise against Bob Bob Ricard myself. Standards have dropped a lot, prices have crept up. I used to love the booth setting but with the expansion of floorspace, they have not managed to maintain standards unfortunately. I used to love the lobster burger

Bentley's is quite cool. Live piano. Some booth seats.

If it has to be French, CM is my favourite. But I note you said you don't want to go there

I haven't been for about a year so I can't comment on recent food but the booth seating and the champagne buttons etc are usually loved by women

Andrew Edmunds on Lexington St, soho.

Can't recommend it highly enough. Traditional British fare, just smarter. Tiny little restaurant, maybe 15-20 tables. hand written menus that change daily and a very reasonable wine list. Candles on the table etc.

After reading this recommendation I took Mrs S there for a long lazy lunch on Friday. Bloody brilliant, from the warm welcome by the hosts, the atmosphere (even though we were seated in the basement), the friendly service, wine recommendation, food (I had goat, which melted in the mouth). We never felt rushed and had a great meal over the 3 hours we were in there. The bill was reasonable also.

Thanks for the recommendation. thumbup

The best meal I had in London last year was at Story. Near the Shard as I recall. The meal is so completely fascinating that it was definitely in the top thre meals I had anywhere in the world.

Dining in an old toilet is romantic? hehe

No it is good but it's tasting menus only and I know that puts some people off

Stumbled across this thread and have to say that this restaurant is absolutely toilet.

Only been once had the tasting menu and flight (not wine, as you might expect, but weird home brewed concoctions) and can safely say it’s the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to. Overpriced, pretentious crap. As an example, one course was a potato (well, obviously not a whole potato) which had been mashed, possible with something completely unnecesary (truffle oil/unicorn semen/whatever). The next course was the tiniest bit of steak I’ve ever seen, which would have gone well with the half potato I’d already eaten, but I’d already eaten that.

Seriously, this place is a joke. We went as a table of 6 and expected the modern day equivalent of Jeremy Beadle (google him, kids) to jump out at any time. The place is either (a) an absolute piss take or (b) some very knowing, ironic, hipster joke I don’t get (which is quite possible) but either way should be avoided.

So it’s another vote for Clos Maggiore from me.

And another avoid Bleeding Heart

The Ivy, at Tower Bridge is an excellent choice, if you can’t get in, just 150 metres away is Le Pont de la Tour, or how about Amerigo Vespucci, at Canary Wharf.

You've good to be kidding!
Crap food, always empty, views over the massive construction sites just to the right.

Perfect restaurant if you're thinking of breaking up with your OH!
