Its hilarious how much they cost considering it costs them around 50p for a large.

Hell of a business to get into.
Yes, but don't forget the delivery cost. Not saying their markup isn't huge, but delivery is probably a bigger cost to them than making the thing!

The 'deals' seem to centre around huge amounts of food. 2-4-1s etc

Never seen a deal for just a single large pizza.

Domino's used to make the best pizza. Bacon, double-cheese a notable highlight. But their rush to maximise profit has led to cheaper, greasier ingredients, with silly prices, followed by an irritating 10min hunt to find and verify the best vouchers or deals. Pizza Hut and others taste better now and are less of a faff to order.

We used to eat Dominos in Saudi at about £3 for a large. Probably my favourite pizza chain.

Never bought one in the UK. £9 on offer? ps off!
Do you also not buy petrol in the UK?

I paid circa 19 quid for Dominoes in 2011. Well below average; never bought anything from them since.

I don't 'do' deals by the way - guess I'm not the Dominoes targeted clientele.
Well, more fools you then Poopie.

Dominoes is absolute muck, but if you are going to get one at least get 50% off.

Dominos are expensive, but they taste the best by far.
I think papa johns are better, but then again I look at these prices I'd prefer to get the best cheese and tomato base from Tesco's and then load it up with some proper toppings which includes blue cheese of course.

Once in a while, I'll get Pappa John's when it s BOGOF.

Anyway, with a bit of forward planning, you could get these from Asda:

The Sainsburys Taste the Difference pizzas are so much better than anything you get from the likes of Dominos or Pizza hut. Annoyingly though they've recently changed from circular to oval pizzas, which means they no longer fit in the combi-microwave so have to go in the normal oven which doesn't tend to cook them quite as well.

I find pizzas generally way overpriced. Few toppings with the biggest ingredients being bread and tomato.

I put on a fair chunk of weight when dominos were doing a lunchtime deal on a four topping personal pizza for £1.99 - much better than a supermarket sandwich.
Glorified cheese on toast. hehe

Want to make an American laugh?

Show them a UK Dominos or Pizza Hut menu.

This prompted one to take a quick look at Domino's UK profit. They make a roughly 7% net profit margin on pizza delivery. Asda make about 1% net profit from its supermarkets. Domino's is, indeed, probably a bit of a rip-off.

I'd love to know the profit on a collected extra-large with all the bells-and-whistles.

If that £18 pizza costs as much as £1.50 in materials and labour to make I'd be very surprised.

Laugh with joy because American pizza is so awful?

Not saying Dominos or Pizza Hut is particularly good but American pizza is terrible in my experience. Inch thick and greasy as anything for the most part.

Ex pizza place owner here, whilst the ingredients are reasonably cheap you must factor in the cost of the ovens, which consume electricity at a phenomenal rate 10Kw+, fridges/freezers, staff, rent/mortgage/rates/advertising etc.

The first pizza each day costs many hundreds to make, of course economies of scale can then make it very profitable business, if you are busy all the time, there is a lot of competition in this sector too with a race to the bottom on price and quality.
