About £3.80 a pint for Guinness then??

Not that bad really is it?
Yes it is bad. It's 1.30GBP too much.
Five quid for a pint of Peroni seems to be the new thing back home in Staffs.

Awful stuff too.

What the fk are you on? I bet the average price of a pint of Guinness in a British pub hasn't been £2.50 since the 90s!

I'm afraid your wrong. £2.50 at a Wetherspoon. Don't drink the stuff myself but that's a big price difference if you do.

Just got back from NZ & Australia and after getting used to paying $15+ for a pint of decent IPA it's nice to be back into single digits again. I was pretty disgusted at having to pay £4.55 for badly kept Guinness the other day myself though. Especially as the glass wasn't even clean. I still think that is the upper end of the price bracket when it comes to a pint of something mass-produced like Guinness and when you are paying that much for it you want it to be at least fresh and served in a glass that isn't disgusting.

So you can go out, sit somewhere warm where someone is paying rates, rent, staff and having to buy the beer you are drinking and try and make enough to cover all that, socialise with friends from 7.30pm till 11pm and have 5 pints of beer and come home with change from £20 and you think that is expensive?

No wonder pubs are dying.
Absolutely!
Nail on head.
Since I was 20 I've heard men of various ages comparing the price of a pint to what they can get in a supermarket. How abysmally socially backwards that argument is still absolutely baffles me.
How can you compare a good pub full of potentially interesting and jolly people, to sitting on your own in front of the telly drinking cheap beer. I'm just glad those people choose not to frequent the pubs I like to.

Got circa 3.70 (or thereabouts) change from 20GBP for 4 pints of Guinness and one pack of crisp. So basically a billion quid for a pint.

Won't be bothering again.
4 Guinness and a bag of crisps is £16.35 in the pub I work in. £3.85 a pint. I don't think that is extortionate. Inn in Rutland. If you want to stay at home and drink tins on your own - that is your prerogative. On the other hand if you want to come out to the pub, drink well kept lagers and ales, listen to a very good band like we had on tonight (and every Saturday), and be a sociable sort, I think the money is well spent. I bloody love working behind the bar on these nights as I get to meet, and talk to, so many interesting people. That is what a pub is. Make friends, have fun, laugh. Staying at home as a miser won't be that!

Amen brothers.

I run a bar in a big city centre and probably hear people moan about once a week and compare how cheap supermarket prices are. I reel off the list of other costs associated with buying a drink in a bar and by the time I've finished, I've bored them into submission.

And not a word about tea in cafes. We all know a teabag cost a penny, the water costs about that and the milk cannot be much more yet everyone's happy to pay £1.50 to £2 for it.

I can tell you as a licensed premises holder that if you are a pint drinker you are getting good value for money.

Guinness is £2.90 in my local.
It's very busy with Guinness drinkers unsurprisingly.
Can't stand the black muck myself.

Sorry if my point came across wrongly. I have no problem paying for stuff, I was highlighting that many people bemoan the price of a pint in a pub compared to a pint at home but will gladly pay £2 for something that effectively costs 5p

I don't know where you're based, but where I am (North West) the local Wetherspoons have Guinness at around £3.20 a pint.

Not sure how much further North you'd have to go to get it at £2.50!

Edit: I've just checked, the average Wetherspoons price seems to be £3.15, and in London it's £4.40.

Four of us went for a pub lunch yesterday but it wasn't until we were back home that we realised the drinks hadn't been charged for (3 x wine, 3 x beer, 1 x mineral water) - each couple had thought the other had paid for them at the bar. O/H went back just now but the barman who was on last night was quite abrupt saying he wouldn't have made that sort of mistake. O/H then spoke with a woman who hadn't been working last night but who couldn't trace an underpayment; surely the till would have been down the cost of seven drinks, a significant amount I would have thought?
