On a related note, for those in the trade, do you charge the same for a pint of shandy as for a pint of beer, and if so, why?
A pint of coke/lemonade In a pub is usually not much cheaper than a pint of beer.

Four of us went for a pub lunch yesterday but it wasn't until we were back home that we realised the drinks hadn't been charged for (3 x wine, 3 x beer, 1 x mineral water) - each couple had thought the other had paid for them at the bar. O/H went back just now but the barman who was on last night was quite abrupt saying he wouldn't have made that sort of mistake. O/H then spoke with a woman who hadn't been working last night but who couldn't trace an underpayment; surely the till would have been down the cost of seven drinks, a significant amount I would have thought?
Wow, your OH was very restraint. I would have replied "Oh ok, must be my mistake" and walked out, serious effort she went to being that honest.

I've always wondered that about soft drinks. I guess coke subsidies beer?

I do wonder if the government need to step in to do something about rents etc. I hear stories of our local brewery charging shock amounts in rent to run one of "their" pubs.

I’m in a student city and often end up queuing with them for a drink in what I would call a posh pub/bar; I wince when I get the bill and wonder how they afford it.

I think they “preload” at home then head to the nicer joints in town opposed to when we were young we would throw £20 over the bar at Spoons for a few jugs of vodka red bull and tequila before heading to the clubs.

The cost of a pint also defines the type of people you are drinking with.

Me and a mate would always meet in a Wetherspoons. Pint 2.50 or a double with mixer 2.99.

We just got fed up with rubbing shoulders with thick uneducated chavs, alcoholics and what must of been some of the ugliest people in London.

Also had to deal with threatening behaviour from time to time.

We moved to the nice place round the corner. OK a fiver a pint and 8 quid for a double G&T but surrounded by nice people and lots of eye candy.

Exactly.

The exception I suppose could be Sam Smiths pubs (some) in London, you can find some alright ones that have cheaper drinks that are full of the same crowd as any other pub in town. My local whetherspoons is a combo of tribal tattoo convention/ staff party for Clancy Docwra that's gone wrong - the food is also total ste. the burger is £3 for a reason. It is awful.

My local freehouse, East Sussex.

Excellent choice of beers changing weekly, ranging from £3.30 to £4.50 a pint depending on alcoholic strength.

Guinness and Stella around £4 a pint.

I run the bar at our golf club (committee run golf club), and we have honesty fridges and sell Draught Guinness, Kronenbourg, San Miguel and John Smiths etc. at £2 a can.

Unsurprisingly the golf club bar is very popular and we're making record profits!!!

I wonder if the OP every buys a half decent burger out?

I must admit, the first time I have ever thought "Ooh, that's quite a lot." when it comes to food or drink, was at Five Guys the other day, Bacon double Cheeseburger, small fries and a shake, twice was £38.50.
Seemed quite a lot for a fast food joint.
You f*ing what? £38 for a burger, bag of chips and a soft drink? Seriously? Seemed quite a lot, I'll say. I only paid about £50 for 2 courses in the Shard the other week, and while that's expensive you do get a bit of a view that someone has to pay for.

Ah, missed the twice bit. That's just hideously overpriced then, as opposed to "offensive".

Some pubs deliberately bump their prices up to affect the type of clientele they get. For example there is one near me that is more set up for family dining and the pints are probably the most expensive in the town so they don't get groups of 'lads' in.

I asked for the price of lime and soda in one bar as was told £8.90 for a pint !

I don't mind paying £5-£7 for a pint if its a nice craft beer on draft when out and about. But when places are charging that for carling and so on I won't drink there.

Where is that place that charges £8.90 for a pint of soft drink - I want to ring them to double check, assume that was in England?

My favourite beers are coming in at £7 to £9 a bottle now and that's Newcastle not London :-0

What most people don't seem to realise is that it's not just the physical drink that they are paying for but the people and the surroundings.
Which would you pay more for ? A night spent with Scarlett Johansson on a Caribbean beach, or a night spent with Scarlett Moffatt down the docks in Newcastle?
Would you complain about the price if Miss Johansson charged twice as much?

Beer is less than that in the most exclusive places in London so I'm struggling to believe that.

Was a bar in a hotel will try and find the name as was a few years ago. I assume they wanted to use glass bottles of soda. Even the guy working just looked at the price and looked confused.

3 x bottles at £2.80 plus 50p for lime could be feasible.

The Cock Tavern in Hackey is fking expensive. Full of £8-9 pints, though they do tell you the price before doing it (which is good), and it's full of hipsters. Some of their beer is also 'raw'/unpasturised from a local brewery called Howling Hops.

I buy direct from the Brewery at (public prices) £1.67 / pint. When I had a trade account it was nearer £1 (depending on volume)
The same beer is £2.50 in one village pub and just over £4 in the (more touristy) next.
