Yeah, but that's just folklore/nonsense, right?

Nobody is actually genetically predisposed to being careful with money based on the location they were born!
Not genetically but (arguably) if you're raised in a culture where people are careful with money you adopt similar traits.

If only there was a breakdown of cars purchased on PCP by region... biggrin
I suppose I don't believe that Northerners are actually any more careful than any other region really. I know tight people and profligate people from all over and I'd struggle to pin down any regional characteristic. I'd say it's more an inherited trait based on how you were brought up/how wealthy your folks are.

Still, that's aside from the thread. I've never been to Nando's so don't know the setup but would generally tip a waitress around 10% if they're doing table service. Tipping annoys me as a 'thing' though, and I hate how militant the Americans are about it. I believe it ought to be a 'treat' for exceptional service (the cabbie who gets you on your flight on time etc) rather than a standard part of the bill, that isn't even on the fking bill.

Totally agree with you about the USA and how they do it. All their system does is pass costs onto the customer that should be borne by the establishment.

I was there a few weeks ago in one of the poorer states and got into a conversation in a diner with a server who said she was on $2.30 an hour which is standard for the position in the area. As she said, if she doesnt get tips she doesnt even cover the gas to get to work.

The food however wasn't any cheaper than here at home, so forget that myth. Thus is because you have sales tax at 7% on the bill then the 15% minimum tip.

It's a lousy system built on consumer guilt. I cant stand it.

Yeah, but not at GBK - it's just a slightly better BK. And Nandos is just a poorer value KFC.

Properly laughing at this brianashley poster - has really brightened up my lunchtime.

He reminds me of a chap that posted (posts?) in the watch forum - Michael something I think his name was. Kept by his wife and thought he was profoundly better than anyone else.

Same person?
