This morning I opened a tin of full fat Coke and took a sip - right away it left a bitter after taste in my mouth.

Surely Coca Cola couldn't have mixed up diet / zero & full fat on the production line?

This is the first of a pack of 8 - hoping the rest don't taste bad like this...

Pepsi have done that.
Hopefully Coca Cola haven’t.

I've been having weird ache/fatigue feelings in my wrist/hand for the last couple of years; likened to carpel/corperal tunnel but too inconsistent in specific area. Normally right (dominant) hand but occasionally mild in left. I work with my hands but it manifests worse of all when hand is under tension hovering over a keyboard or tablet. I think I may have nailed it to the aspartame as maybe the cause or at least a factor.

Normally have a can of pop on the way to work, maybe more in the day, and often some diet ginger ale in the evening. Cutting it out has made the complaint less frequent. Early days though.

Is this a thing ? Picked up some Schweppes non diet ginger but that still has (other) sweetners. Fentimans too strong, I like to taste the whisky, id have to use jura just so it cuts throughhehe

Looking at getting a sodastream thing and making my own... Don't care too much for sweetness anyway and full fat coke makes me a bit light headed, but enjoy a tangy cherry Coke as a bit of a mild jolt in the morning.

Following up on my thread above about the odd tasting Coca Cola.

After opening another tin and noting the odd smell and taste, I got in touch with Coca Cola and they requested I return a sample of the drink which I did (3 tins). (this after asking for batch numbers and so on)

The drinks were sent to them early this month (2nd Jan) with a promise they would get back to me with their findings.

I have followed up with a request to know their findings but nothing has been forthcoming as yet, apart from a request for the parcel slip from the post office (which I supplied).

Based on the taste and smell of the product, I can't help thinking this was a 'miss fill' and the tins were filled either with diet coke or coke zero (yuk!!).

I have put this theory to them, but they are remaining steadfastly silent.

So they've either lost the products I returned, or don't want to divulge their findings.

Sugar is a natural product, with variations, and so I wonder if it's down to the type of sugar used.

I would never have believed that beet sugar tastes different to cane sugar, until I tried them side by side.

I'm guessing the UK default is beet sugar as this is cheaper, however I'm wondering if there are variations even within that, and they're cheaping out with a lower grade raw ingredient.

Just seen that recipe for that. Add sugar, add yeast, leave for 2-3 days to get "fizzy". They seem to have missed out the part where if you add a kilo of sugar and some yeast that after 2-3 days you probably are half way through the fermentation process and at a rough estimate probably about 5%. My rough calculations would suggest a kg of fermentables in 2 litres could go to north of 10% given the right yeast.

"A bit of fermentation is involved, which produces a very slight alcohol content (not noticeable, but important to point out for those sensitive to alcohol)." <-- seems to very much play this down !!!!!

Mystifies me why someone would drink fizzy drink every morning. Let alone + lunchtime and in the evening too! I drink tea but I view that as natural tongue out

Morrisons do the 500 ml Cherry Coke in the sarnie section if anyone is interested. The full sugar one is the purple label with the WHITE writing. The migraine version is the purple label with BLACK writing. So don't get them mixed up ! Asda and Tesco don't go the full sugar ones at all, based on a scout around my local stores. Full sugar cherry coke is a nice treat ! lick

Anyone think that eg coke out the can is different from coke in those 500ml plastic bottles? I choose a can or glass bottle every time where possible, I’m sure it tastes different.

In Tesco to find them selling Fanta Fruit Twist 'zero' not the regular stuff. Wondering if Fruit Twist is gone now?

I fking hope not. Since the "sugar tax" destroyed almost every soft drink my options were reduced to regular Cola and Fanta Fruit Twist because they're made with sugar. I won't buy anything with artifictial sweeteners because I can't stand them, they give you the sts and are carcinogenic. Thoroughly pissed off about this, I hardly drink any soft drink - a can every other day? Nasty little country this

You do realise the standard fruit twist also has sweetener in right?

No I didn't but what's your point? It doesn't change what I've stated in my OP does it.

It does, because you've stated with lots of sweary words that you won't drink anything containing sweeteners -- but now you're saying that you won't be drinking anything with 'only' sweeteners wobble

It may be that the (natural) sugar content offset the affects of the aspartame and acesulfame potassium sweeteners and so it was fine for him. The only ingredient removed in the zero version is the sugar. Everything else is identical.

Fanta Fruit Twist Zero :

Carbonated Water
Fruit Juices from Concentrate 4.4% (Orange 3.4%, Peach 0.5%, Apple 0.4%, Passion Fruit 0.1%)
Citric Acid
Malic Acid
Preservative (Potassium Sorbate)
Vegetable and Plant Concentrates (Carrot, Safflower)
Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K)
Natural Flavourings
Stabilisers (Glycerol Esters of Wood Rosins, Guar Gum)

Still chugging through my bumper delivery of Belvoir Farm Orange Cordial from last year here, and still migraine free!

Other than the standard Coke and Cherry Coke (label with white writing only - the black writing is the 'zero') it's impossible to find any soft drinks (excl water) without sweeteners in now at the major supermarkets. You are wasting your time even looking.

Avoid all these :

acesulfame K (E950)
aspartame (E951)
erythritol (E968)
saccharin (E954)
sorbitol (E420)
steviol glycosides (E960)
sucralose (E955)
xylitol (E967)

950 951 and 955 are in pretty much every sweet drink and processed food in UK and are the main ones. Also watch out for them in medication, particularly cold/'flu/cough/chest infection relief products.

A photo from a local kebab shop. With the exception of full fat Coca Cola, every soft drink here contains sweeteners!
