Jura - do not miss it out. In fact I would say it deserves two days - distillery and all day breakfast over the road at the hotel is half a day gone.

How long are you there for and in which area are you staying Pete ?
You need to head out to the peninsula's - past Ardbeg is one of my favourites beauty areas.
Do you like (feathered) birds ? The nature reserve or eagle spotting.
Don't try going to the Co-op on Sunday morning - everyone is at home pretending they are at Church - but get in the queue early for opening time.
And remember - wave at all passing drivers - you need to fit in as you go from distillery to distillery - or other place of interest.

And are you flying over from the new headquarters of the EU smile, or driving ? I haven't yet managed to add those extra few miles down to Campbeltown - maybe next time.
I'm only there for Thursday, Friday and virtually all of Saturday. I have the 10.30 tour at Ardbeg reserved and plan on doing the west of Islay on Thursday as soon as I arrive. I'll see how much a cask is scratchchin

I am back at my parent's house in the UK so will be driving as there will be several purchases being made and I have never driven through England before. I also have to make a stop over in York on the way home.

Bird watching is a good call as I plan to walk along the southern coastline to allow the whisky to evapourate from my pours after the tour!

Thanks for the pointers!

Suggestion - not long enough time on there ! You need to re-plan.

York - Check Field & Fawcett on the Grimston Bar roundabout of the A64. A deli / wine retailer who are now building a stock of whisky at reasonable prices. Not everything is on the website as they are building it when they have time - a lot of their business is to the trade but there is a steady retail custom

Yes - but you could call it an expensive T-Shirt smile Say hello to Mary the shop manager there from me.

Places to go..
On the way down from the ferry - Finlaggan is nice (although you don't need to go into the visitor centre - although the background to it is interesting) over the fence to the right of the building and down you go.

Portnahaven - lots of seals in the harbour and a nice little pub (with not bad food also) if a little cramped smile

Port Charlotte hotel - good food, good selection of whisky. The conservatory at the back is nice even though you have to run and get your own drinks.

Lochside Inn - good food, bloody excellent selection of whiskies.

Take the little side road adjacent to fence line on the north side of the airport and follow it down (it's a little potted) to the beach. Miles to walk on with no-one else there. There is also a lovely beach (up past Kilchoman) just keep going straight on as you pass Kilchoman, the bird reserve is on the right hand side junction.

As has been said - up past Ardbeg (past the Kildalton Cross) there is a nice pebbled beach with lots of seabirds and some great stones - oh and the occasional cow milling about in the stream there.

Parents brought me a bottle of Cardhu back from France.
Had a taste on Thursday night, very nice. Quite soft and a little sweet. Need to taste again when not so tired after a heavy week.

Just came back from The Grill in Aberdeen. I'd forgotten what a great selection of whiskies they have in there.

everything from 2.10 a nip to £225 a nip.

Ask for the book to look at and then drool.

Interesting to note that Supernova was half the price it was on Islay (9.50 a nip)

This looks like it definitely needs closer inspection! looked on the website and this made me chuckle:

"It wasn't until December 1975 that women were officially served in The Grill, following the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975. This was followed sometime after by the construction of a ladies toilet in 1998."

It's a proper bar. Ladies used to have to out the back door, across the road to The Star and Garter to use their toilets.

The Grill is served by lovely old ladies who know how to pour a pint and certainly have been serving there for at least 25 years that I know of.

Not any more, since they entered talks with Remy about taking over they have stopped selling casks.

Sorry I have been so quite for a while, have been moving house, job and country. Now I reside in Glasgow.

Well worth the trip, as Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland that does all its own malting and also has it's own bottling plant onsite it is rather unique.
The drive is rather fun too so long as it is a hire car, damage from pot holes may make the journey a little less fun if in your own car!

Opened the JW Blue yesterday with a few colleagues in the office. I know that quite a few people have been let down by it, but only being able to compare a Bushmills 21 and Dewars Signature, it is actually pretty good.

A colleague has just dropped a glass of Bunnahabhain Daroch Ur at 46.3%, one might think that it is a bit early in the day ...

Alcohol is a little raw, but a well put together whisky. I hate random descriptive words, but it has substance in the mouth, chewy almost. I would probably like it more in about 12 hours time, but I actually quite like it ...

Sainsbury's were doing an offer on the Jura 10 year old, so I indulged. It's not a bad drop, not bad at all.

Whisky with a slight twist.

Thought I would go down to see 'Angel's Share' which they were to start showing tonight. Postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. It hadn't arrived. So they decided to show Snow White instead !!!
The other option was to go and see Batman, at the other spot. Bit risky ?

So here I am with the last of the Ardbeg Day, watching Ice Road Truckers, and my last 75W of solar PV being generated as the sun (yes - sun) goes down.

Angels share sounds good (my parents warned me of the amount of swearing) so be interested to hear how good it is.
