Does anyone have any pointers for Duty Free only bottlings? My girlfriend is off to Heathrow from Frankfurt tomorrow and I need something different. I had some Spice Road from Johnny Walker at Christmas and it was very drinkable.
Try Bowmore Enigma or Auchentoshan Select for Duty Free bottlings, both very drinkable. smile

George, I have a bottle of that Aldi 30 year old, only tried a couple of glasses, but find it a little sweet and not something I'd spend £55 on again.

Tried the Glengoyne last night and that is very nice indeed. smile

I'm getting the impression that whisky is something that is quite collectible.
To the people that collect it, do you ever drink it? Or does it stay sealed in the bottle on the shelf? smile
I have a bottle of Gordon's Cask, bought for £115, currently going for about £500.

It'll be opened on my 50th for those friends who will appreciate it, unless some rich bugger offers me a great deal more money than that.
How long ago did you buy it and is there a way of knowing what will be collectable? smile
Bought just over two years ago.

Apart from the presentation (pretty wooden box), it has a 'story' to go with the bottle; it's a story that suggests a better tasting whisky than usual. It also guarantees that this is a one-off batch that can never be repeated.

You'll never guarantee what will be sought-after- just buy it because it appeals to you.

Longrow 14 at the moment. Not a bad dram at all, lacks the fire of the NAS CV but loses some of the OOmph as well. Certainly one to try, does not pass the "buy again" test for me, but a good exercise.

Probably be the last bottle for me now untill the Autumn, warm weather and Gin beckoning.

This year was a curious one for me whisky wise, partly owing to my self imposed Diageo boycott, I've delved into Bourbons and found myself pleasantly surprised, pity about the costs of the stuff over here, my stateside relative has never been so popular. biggrin

Tried my first Bowmore this past year for the first time in many a year, I was seriously impressed. The expression I chose, was an immediate "buy again" , in fact I'm pondering getting 3 or 4 more , does not do to be caught empty handed !

I think I'll give it a miss in that case. £55 is a bit rich for me anyway.

Quite a bad cold has arrived today, so I think I'll be picking up a bottle of reasonably cheap blended Whisky and some Stone's Ginger Wine on my way home tomorrow. Perfect cold remedy!

Tell us what its like - how noticeable is the Sauternes in the finish? I love my pudding wines, this could be an interesting dram. smile

Auchentoshan nearly gone. Quite a potent drink that (for me).

Opened the Dalwhinnie and not sure if I'll like it. It has a very nutty texture and I'm not too keen on nuts. Oh well, will give it a proper try over the weekend. smile

Dalwhinnie has grown on me. With the right amount of water it's a very easy drink. smile

Opened the Ledaig before coming to bed to see what it smells like. I got a kick of iodine, smoke and then some fruity nutty sensation. Quite nice in an odd sort of way.

I'm finding quite distinct differences to the different brands. Interesting stuff. smile

Running down half-empty bottles in advance of house move. Penderyn Portwood getting more fiery as the bottle goes down, very interesting. Still bloody lovely.

Just spotted this thread. I'm sure this has been covered, but where do you chaps buy from? Specialist shops seem pretty thin on the ground, but it would be nice to have a salesman there when buying a bottle. I've been relying on Jim Murray's book so far. Does it make sense to buy online?

Whisky Exchange at Vinopolis, duty free, distilleries and Waitrose/Sainsburys for me.

Obviously supermarkets have more 'everyday' choices, more unusual varieties are TWE/DF.

I have bought all of my stuff online through The Whisky Exchange. I've also noticed another site called Master of Malt which seems to have comprehensive tasting notes.

Pretty much the same here.

Note that TWE at Vinopolis cannot access your purchases from TWE on the internet. They do have casks that at bottled on site though smile

I've bought from a few specialist shops in London, but have been far from impressed.

Only specialist shop I've used is Robert Graham in Cambridge and really recommend it.
