I picked this up on Saturday as I was passing their distillery.
Penderyn Peated

How is it? The normal Penderyn was one of the first bottles of whisky I ever bought. If I remember correctly, it was pretty nice.

I've not really been a Whisky drinker until fairly recently. My wife bought me 2 bottles of 18 y.o Glenmorangie, which I've now finished (!), and I received a bottle of Talisker as a gift from a colleague last year.
To the Talisker I've added,
- Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban (love it!)
- Highland Park 12
- Glenlivet 18

Typically I've not been spending more than €40/bottle, so which types do you more knowledgeable folk think I should try, please?

(Although I'm on the continent, my local Auchan has a GREAT selection of Whiskies - including some Japanese, too.)
I'll take a picture at lunchtime and will post it here.

Just to add to my earlier post, today's stock in Auchan. The priciest Japanese whisky they had has sold out!

My mate, well versed in things Scotch, thinks I should try the Aberlour 16, which is €34 currently.

You've largely been trying the mass market stuff. Given what you've tried so far, maybe try a Balvenie (the Doublewood will appeal if you like the Quinta Ruban) and then consider the more specialist stuff available via mail order. smile

The Yamazaki 12 is a very good starting point for Japanese whisky. Look online though as prices in Europe are a bit of a piss take.

It's not massively peaty and hasn't got the depth of flavour of some of the other whiskys I've been drinking recently. My current favourite is Lagavulin 16 for reference. When I stopped at the shop it was gone five and it was about to shut so I didn't have a great deal of time. I've read good things about their Madiera finished whisky and I'm wondering if I should have grabbed that one rather than going with the peated. Next time I'm in the area I'll do the tour and make my OH drive so I can sample it. smile

I like the Singleton of Dufftown, been appearing a lot in supermarkets down south recently at good prices. Very smooth. In 5pots pic I think the Aberlour is a sherry one too? Had a bottle looked very similar to that last summer, it lasted about a week, your mate has good taste!

Picked up a bottle of GlenDronach Allardice last time I was up in North Berwick, had never heard of it before but am definitely a convert, lovely sherry taste.

The Singleton of Dufftown was / is designed to help intorduce people to malts.

If you're liking the sherried taste, then look at the other Speyside malts - Aberlour (as you mention), Balvenie, and then as you get a taste for them look at something a bit more challenging like a Dalmore.

Have three nights in Edinburgh in May. Going to visit some whisky establishments. Are there any local to Edinburgh (we won't be in a car)?

Wish I'd kept it sealed and just drunk my public bottle!

But it's freakin awesome, Sláinte!
Tried the Ten tonight. Really, really smoky and made me feel a little sick. Also gave me a bit of indigestion.

I either need to try and get used to it, or it just isn't for me.

Some of you mentioned previously that the Ten is probably the worst Ardbeg to try for the first time. I think you are right. smile
I love the 10yo but I can understand any of the really strong Southern Islay whiskies could be an acquired taste. It might be worth trying a Bunnahabhain or something else a little more gentle?

More of that Corryvreckan for me tonight, i really, really love it. Quite possibly my favourite whisky ever!

Sláinte Mhath!
I'll take a look at your recommendation above. smile

Due to wife being pregnant and diabetic, I haven't touched the stuff for a week or so now. May have a dram or two over the next few days or the weekend though.

Sill on the miniatures. smile

From the piccys above, I can see 4 whiskies begging to be tried.

Bunnahabhain 12, Caol Ila 12, Springbank 10 , and Nikka from the barrel.

There are others too, but if you don't get on with Caol Ila, its unlikely you will get on with the likes of Lagavulin.(as example)

I've learnt something today.

The Singleton is one of my favoured "every day" bottles.

Just about to finish a bottle frown

I like the bottle too as you can hide it at the back of the cupboard.

Looks good. We are staying at a hotel near the station so that isn't too far to stagger. smile

It's a really good place to start though... although it's a downward slope cost-wise hehe

Try an Aberlour 10, as the next step up taste wise.

This, as ever, is great advice.

Had a bottle of Arbelour, ended up giving it to my Dad (he'll drink anything)

The singleton is current complemented by an Ardbeg 10, a Laphroaig quarter cask and a bottle of Black Grouse, which is actually quite lovely.

If you find the Aberlour too harsh, then perhaps try a Tomintoul.

Had my first glass of that the other night and really enjoyed it. Think I'm getting a taste for Islay peaty whiskies, as I got that and a Bowmore the other day which tastes good but doesn't sit under yer hooter as well as the Laphroaig. smile
