Had a glass of the Waitrose 12 year old Islay last night and have to say it's very nice indeed, not too peaty, smooth and plenty going on under your nose. Went down very well and pretty good for £30. smile
An "Islay" that's not too peaty is about as useful as dishwater imo. Peat it up!

Bought my first collection bottle in Edinburgh yesterday.

It's an Ardbeg Galileo. smile

Hasn't taken long to get me started.

Went to a pub after who sold the stuff to give it a try (not opening my bottle). It tastes nice. smile

It's not a bad dram at all. Now you are getting into the swing of things, start trying to find samples from the new opening after Glenmorangie bought Ardbeg. If you ever see a bottle of Very Young, I urge you to try it. Divine.

Only one day to go to the Whisky Fair beer

If you haven't tried it - the Glen Garioch Virgin Oak is a nice drop.

god knows what kind of casks (very mild toast??) they used to stop it tasting like a bourbon, but it works.

Funnily enough I saw that in my local shop last night, I'll maybe nip along to the distillery to try it next week. I lived a lot if their old core range but the newer ones I've found disappointing frown

I had a very nice bottle of Glenrothes 1991 I picked up in Calgary.

Lovely whisky and a lovely bottle.

Too good to throw out so I've found an alternative use for it.

A tiki lamp.

It's looking lonely so I've started on having a twin for it. I'm going to add some food colouring to the lamp fluid to bring the colour in line with a whisky.

Running a bit low on Whisky now, but planning on visiting Scotland with my Dad in a couple of months or so so I reckon I'll try to pick up a few bottles there. We'll be visiting Edinburgh, then somewhere in the highlands for a few days, then Glasgow; if anyone knows of any excellent whisky shops in either of those 2 cities, I'll try to check them out smile.

I'll have to see if I can persuade my Dad to be the designated driver for a tour of some distilleries biggrin I'd love to do Islay as it's where a lot of my favourite whiskies are from; how do you get to the island? A ferry I presume?
I dip in and out of this thread, but thought this was worth replying to. Sounds like a brilliant little trip you've got planned, I can guarantee you'll love it up here.

Glasgow is my city, so I can heartily recommend the Good Spirits Co. for buying booze. Their website is: http://www.thegoodspiritsco.com and the shop is just off Buchanan St, the main shopping street here in town. Run by three guys who really know their stuff, the customer service and selection is amazing. Took my Dad there over Christmas and we spent roughly an hour talking whisky with one of the guys, who offered us drams whilst we browsed the shelves. Small wee shop, down below street level, but can't recommend it highly enough.

Glasgow and Edinburgh each have a BrewDog bar, as well, which is worth visiting. Also, if you're in to ale, try and seek out a pint of draught Fyne Ales stuff, produced up near Loch Fyne and truly, truly brilliant.

Ferry indeed to islay, Caledonian MacBrayne run the service I believe.
I'm leaving for this trip in roughly an hour; got a long drive ahead in my shed MG biggrineek It seems doubtful Islay is going to be done on this trip, but other distilleries will definitely be visited. Hoping to do the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye. Any other suggestions are very welcome smile

Love it. I have a little 20cl bottle nearing its end. Perhaps a baby brother!

Enjoy the fair.

Keeping my eye out for that whisky now although this month's budget has been spent on the Galileo. smile
