So as our week in Speyside comes to an end, I'm looking at our souvenirs...
Would highly recommend a Balvenie tour (they have their own Cooperage so saves a trip to the Speyside one), and a trip to Glenglassaugh (especially if you have a share in an octave there). Popped into Glenfiddich to buy a bottle your own, but it's too commercial for a tour IMO.
Aberlour was fab too, but we did the "Casks from the Past" rather than a distillery tour. Overall we got to see a lot, and with Glenglassaugh being on shutdown and with Lefty's connection got an even better tour.
A fab week, some amazing whisky, great souvenirs and nice to finally meet Lefty after all these years!

Did you try any glenglassaugh? Assume so? What did you think?
Nearly picked up a nice old bottle on my way through duty free but relented on account of already having one other bottle in my case already...
Sampled many of their offerings (including the 30yo) and these two...
Yep... That does say 3 years old!
Just about to drop you a mail actually....

So you did get the bottling I was mentioning at Edradour - but which have you got ? I have had a couple of Cask 430 - 1998. Very agreeable - a very deep rich experience.
How was Balvenie - that was today wasn't it ? It would have been rude to not pick up the Solera at the same time.
No, came away with the cask strength Edradour from 2000. Same as this - http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-25614.aspxHow was Balvenie - that was today wasn't it ? It would have been rude to not pick up the Solera at the same time.
Balvenie was great. Really good tour, nice and relaxed. Coffee and shortbread to start, a tour around the facilities, a good bit on history. A trip down to the Cooperage, see the famous warehouse that gave us Snow Phoenix, a gawp at Kininvie's shed and then to Warehouse 24 where you can bottle your own from a cask - using a dog!
Despite its size, it's not overly commercial either. Popped to Glenfiddich for a bite to eat, but it was rammed. Bottled our own there too, which although lovely 15yo Solera is expensive it's a very sanitised experience in the gift shop (but the staff were friendly).
I think we chose well this week.
- Aberlour casks from the past - great to sample rare whisky in a lovely environment
- Glenglassaugh - seeing your own barrel and tasting is quite special. Friendly people who are clearly going to be big - as Lefty said - one to watch.
- Balvenie - fab tour, nice tasting.
- whisky shop Dufftown - interesting and useful advice, good selection and samples on offer!
- Glenfiddich - popped in to grab a bottle, lovely site, shame the restaurant was packed.
- Edradpur - popped in for a bottle. Really friendly guy in the shop, but sadly no bottle your own.
Anyone visiting Glenfiddich should pay the £10 (over and above the free tour) to go on the Explorer's Tour.
The guides are much more knowledgeable, more time is spent on the tour rather than just breezing through the process, and you also get into another warehouse, the one which contains the solera vats.
This warehouse in itself is a fascinating place, lots of unusual and rare casks are hidden away in there.

Our whole whiskies team headed down to Tennessee this week to look at JD, Dickel, Willett and Corsair. I missed it because I'm going to a friends wedding tomorrow.
Think I've been one of the lucky ones.. Just got my nuts on this!

The 7th one along is a Glenglassaugh. We visited the distillery with Lefty and sampled some of the PH casks.

I didn't even remember it was in this post, but picked up this yesterday in my local. Sampled many of their offerings (including the 30yo) and these two...

Just started trying to get into Whisky, managed to get a little collection going last weekend with my first 3 bottles.
Started with: Talisker, Jura Gold and a Dalwhinnie.
Must say, with a little teaspoon of water just to take off the burn a little, I'm really enjoying comparing the three. Loving the Talisker (didn't think I would to be honest!). I'm going to carry on with them and try and discover some more of the flavours.
