A Glenlivet 12 year old

What recommendations for a novice.
I've only recently started drinking whiskey but found the glenlivet nice and smooth.

I'm no expert, but can try and answer a bit. They're pretty normal releases. The taste of the whisky will probably be a bit different to the same ones today. One thing to maybe consider is selling them if they're unopened (and in good condition potentially). They would get a bit more due to their age (as in stored for 20 years, not the age on the bottle), despite being a normal release. Maybe some here will not like that, but in my opinion it would give someone an older whisky who wants that style, and may give you a bit more money to use on trying different types of whisky. If they're opened and have been for a long time it will be different, and they're also likely to have got worse in taste due to interaction with the air.

The thing to do is try different styles of whisky to see which (if any!) you like. Have a google to see some of the different styles (Islay, Speyside etc) and try tasting them. You can get small tasting sets, which will be better to start with to find your preference. Generally 10-16 years is pretty normal in age, above that they get a bit more/ massively expensive depending on which one.
Thanks for that. The tasting set sounds like a great idea.

I had a look in the supermarket earlier & the price does seem to vary a lot - £18-£45 for what seemed to be the same thing bar a fancier box.

You'll all laugh at me now but... Any ideas where a bottle can be bought from?

I got mine here http://www.kosherwineuk.com/suntory-yamazaki-sherr... but it's out of stock there and at the usual suspects now, might be some left somewhere but I guess stocks weren't huge prior to the review article.

looking for a little advice as to what to try next please, as ASDA have a few interesting looking offers on.

i really liked laphroaig - such an interesting mix and depth of flavour. i could easily sip a tot slowly over an hour and enjoy it. i triad the standard Jura and enoyed that too, but it's more of a drinking whisky,as it doesn't leave that lovely lingering taste that the peaty laphroaig does

so yesterday i was trying to choose between

Jura Prophecy (on offer at £42 from £50)
Laphroaig quarter cask (£33 from £36) - but is this actually much different than the regular Laphroaig?
Talisker storm (£35 from £39)
Ardmore (£26 from £31.50)

already going to pick up a bottle (or two) or the Arbelour 10yr, as a result of this thread.

many thanks

It depends - some of the price will vary with age. Others will be different versions (one example is using a different type of barrel to mature the whisky in). I'm not sure what the UK prices are these days, but it may be some of those are blends. They tend to be less interesting to whisky drinkers than single malts, but some can be very good. Some will also be less well known names, so they have to be cheaper. And obviously some are made with bigger "shortcuts" and so can be sold more cheaply.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure they where picking 1 out of 8 and upgrading them to the Premium where they not?

I'd rather not look. Is the premium worth nearly double the cost?

I just googled it and found those. However using the spoiler alert menu there does appear to be a bit of a difference. The "normal" one appears to have quite a few blends and independent distillers, whereas the Premium one is generally the "official" releases and generally 18yo+ in age. So it is more expensive whisky, but I don't know enough about the examples to know if they are actually much better tasting.

Here are the lists if you want to see them:

Normal:

- Glenfarclas 10 Year Old
- The Lost Distilleries Blend - Batch 6
- The Macallan Amber - 1824 Series

- Nikka Whisky From The Barrel
- Dalmore 15 Year Old
- Spirit of Hven Seven Stars No.2 Merak
