I need a bit of advice please ?
I need to buy a bottle for the father in law . . apparently he's fond of peated, smoky whiskies - not too much peat and smoke but got to be there far more than the Speysides I'm keen on.

Anybody recommend something about £60ish or so which is peated and smoky ? I'm guessing that's probably enough to get something quite nice ?

Cheers !

I got a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel Bourbon delivered today, I brought it on impulse and it will be being returned unless someone wants it here first, I want to stick with malts for now and not open another world of obsession!

Thanks, is that *very* peated and smoky ? Suggest anything a little less intense ?

Sounds a good choice if he doesn't like too much smoke and peat.

Ah, thanks - I just read the tasting notes on MofM and it suggested it was very smoky with a lot of peat ?

A friend of mine blew his Porsche up, so I lent him my Mini to run around in. Thoughtfully, he dropped this off today.

Give Caol Ila 12 a go. Peaty and smoky but not as strident as the Lagavulin (my main dram of choice) The Caol Ila is in most Waitrose.

Other than that, a Bowmore may fill the bill, Tempest if you can get it, have never tried the 12, but perhaps worth looking into.

did go for 2, but one to drink and one for the best man as i am getting married in May. Not sure I can really get down with the idea of treating them as an investment rather than to be enjoyed.

I am picking one up on Saturday afternoon and have had it sat aside for the last 3 months, he's charging me £95, I feel bad saying "don't worry about it"...

Great thread, I have a few bottles in the stores, 3 bottles of Jameson's, bottle of gentleman jack and a recent addition thanks to a customer at work a bottle of monkey shoulder.

shame that, i guess it's not a million miles off. There are some online retailers that had them at £125 plus postage!

so, did they do another release or something, or did they just hold some back?

I must admit, I've got a few recent Ardbeg bottles (Some Aligators, then Day, Ardbog and Auverdes)and they're generally decent, but surely they're now being sold as collectors items it means that's exactly what they won't be?

As the prices slowly climb and the number of bottles made seems to grow, is it worth hanging onto them? I'm starting to think that drinking them might be the way to go.

I have a Coryvrecken open, so after a couple of those I may think that's a great idea! smile

That could be the way to go if you think the Lagavulin will be too much - it's a bit difficult to know if not too much peat is something like the Lagavulin, or a bit less. I'd regard something like Ardbeg as the real peat monsters.

I have 2 bottles of the Aurverdes from before, but I suspect they'd not be a good investment for the very reason you say. A lot of the releases are not limited enough in numbers when most people will store them for the future. So there is unlikely to be a big drop in the number available and therefore the price won't do much.

Anybody interested in one of my Talisker 1985 (27yo Diago Special release). I'll be putting it in auction just after Christmas otherwise.
