When the times right (that I grow some nuts) I'll send you a sample of a bottle I've got tucked away. This is the notes of the bottle & its mindbogglingly amazing, I m just to scared to open it because I will not last more than a day!
Is that a SMWS bottling? I've seen a few of the Yamazaki bottling descriptions, and they sound stunning!I was lucky enough to try the 1984 Yamazaki when I was at the distillery, and it was gorgeous. Really full of dried fruit notes, and dark brown sugar, but not heavy. Quite impressive to pull off, and such a shame it's currently about a grand a bottle if you can find it!

The last 2 bottles of 1984 sold for around 2000€ a piece on whiskyauction.com! I'm still waiting for that special day to open mine.I was lucky enough to try the 1984 Yamazaki when I was at the distillery, and it was gorgeous. Yamazaki 10 was the first whisky that got me into whisky. I then went onto the 12 and 18 yo bottlings which I drunk far too much of. This was when the 18 was around 60 quid a bottle though. The Hibiki 17 is lovely. Very subtle for a blend and it will take a couple of glasses to 'get' it I think. Whatever you do, don't try the 21yo first as it, IMHO, is one of the best blends for any money you can buy. Only trouble is the price. Like all Japanese whisky in the past 8 years, the price has gone through the roof. Don't even get me started on Hanyu and their 'cards series' or Karuizawa. There are some fantastic whiskies from both distilleries but for the former you will be spending about a grand a bottle or. for the Karuizawa, 2 to 3 grand for a Noh Whisky or around 500 to a 1000 for the 'standard' fillings. Even the 2 affordable bottlings, 'Spirt of Assama' 55% and 48% have doubled in price since coming out last year.
Nikka Coffey 'whiskies' are very nice and they have released to bottlings this year. One with a red label, whereas the other is yellow. Both are very nice. Ichiro's Malts are also very drinkable. They are vattings from the chap who used to work for Chichibu.
Chichibu have started releasing new whiskies after starting to distill again. Their Port pipe bottling is very very good for a 3 year old as is their bourbon bottling. Yoichi 12 and 15yo are also very good.
In short, I bloody love Japanese whisky.
Single cask Yamazakis are, as a rule, always very good.

Wow, when my numbers come up, I'll definitely stock up on the 1984! My wife got me a bottle of the Yamazaki 18 as an engagement present, and it's getting towards the 1984. Might have a wee drop of that tonight. Yamazaki 10 was the first whisky that got me into whisky. I then went onto the 12 and 18 yo bottlings which I drunk far too much of. Narita had some decent offers on Suntory stuff, and I got a bottle of Hibiki 17 and a half bottle of Hibiki 21 for £90 I think. Not sure when I'll open the 21 though, suspect it'd need to be some very significant event!

Interesting, what do you make of the Noah's Mill? I have it on my bourbon radar and would welcome any observations. Blown2CV said:
hefty coffee and caramel nose and mouth, i love it! Got to admit that i've not touched it in a while since the scotch collection has been growing out a bit...
Thanks for that. Certainly staying on the Bourbon list then. Somewhere below the impossibly hard to get ones, but we live in hope. Cheese Mechanic said:

Had the Masters of Malt Christmas Tasting Set as an early present. Going to add some quick notes, mainly for my own record.
Just tried the FEW Rye Whiskey. Could definitely smell some of the apple hints, nice sweet, almost honey like palate and definitely got the spicey, orangey finish to it. Not quite as smooth as I like though, nor smokey or peaty in anyway. Not bad as an easy drinker. I'd go with 6.5/10.

Bottle in the stash, got it extremely cheaply as well, out of San Diego, via family. Keep eyeing it up, perhaps one for autumn 2015 .sorry for the whiskey content, whisky puritans!
Gave a bottle of Glenfiddich 125th anniversary to the father in law and opened it on Xmas eve.
Actually a very nice drop - lightly peated, slightly sweet - very drinkable. Surprising, considering the previous peated 'Fiddich, the Caoran, was among my least favorite whiskies.
They seem to be going for quite a markup, but its very much worth drinking if you have one.

One of the travel versions (vintage cask?) is prayed as well. Seems odd for a GF!Actually a very nice drop - lightly peated, slightly sweet - very drinkable. Surprising, considering the previous peated 'Fiddich, the Caoran, was among my least favorite whiskies.
