Where you staying? I am Edinburgh based.

If you're staying in the Royal Mile, pretty much every place in the Royal Mile is a go'er however, you will pay tourist prices. Drop me a PM if you want more info for stuff to do, eat etc.

Castle terrace restaurant is very good and the whisky lounge in the Balmoral is well worth a visit.

In Victoria St, there's the Bow Bar for whisky, or Maison Bleue for food. Also near the mile there' s the Malt Shovel on Cockburn St.

Other places for whisky include Bennets Bar in Tollcross, or Cadenheads whisky shop down towards the bottom of the royal mile in the Canongate.

Talisker 18 me mate. One of the 2 great readily available whiskies under £100,IMHO. (at least, of those I have tried)
Always one of my favourites and stands up well to pretty much anything regardless of price.

Not easy to get though.

I have the 25 instead at the moment and it's very drinkable but I think I'd rather have 2 bottles of 18...

Funny you should say that, I'm over in Cork in Feb, had planned to visit the Jameson distillery, any decent pubs I should be visiting?

Oops... may have just ordered 19 samples and a bottle of the Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 3 and Aberlour a'Bunadh Batch 50! Just hope it avoids customs on the way!

Discovered more about the Karuizawa 1984 I am getting from the vinmonopolet. It's 29yo, matured in Spanish Oak Oloroso Sherry Butt from cask 7802. 577 bottles and it's at 56.7%. Should be interesting!

Is it the Sakura?

Batch 3 is very nice and I have just bought a Aberlour Batch 29 which I am looking forward to.

I've heard all the cask strength batches are really good.

The Karuizawa is this one I believe. It just came out in Norway and there's very little I can find out about it. Waiting on it arriving.

They don't really help your whisky due to oxidization, especially as people often want to put the "best" whisky in a nice decanter.

Good if you have a big party and want to put whisky on the table, bad for storing whisky longer than a few days.

Makes sense. Figured oxidisation would be an issue but guess that depends on seal. Got a bottle of Talisker cask strength from distillery - it's 10 years old, been open a year as the cork on the bung is broken off in the neck of the bottle. Was wondering whether to decant it, or go with a rubber bung.. Bung it is...

I guess it also depends on the amount of air that would be in the bottle. I think it is mentioned around 1/2 full and it's better to drink quickly. I also read recently you can use wine preservers to effectively displace as much of the oxygen in the whisky bottle to help it keep longer. It's inert gas you put in the bottle.

Midleton where Jameson is made is 12 miles East of the city, there s a commuter train going there. Allow a good hour for the tour. Finnin's Restaurant/Pub is nice, if you have a car drive 6 further miles south to Aghads and Rosies Bar.

Cork City Pubs with character are Dan Lowery's , The Oven's Bar, and the Long Valley. There s a tiny tiny pub on Northgate Bridge run by two Scots yougfellas, I like it, cant remember the name, it s 50 yds from the funeral home towards the Bridge.

Give me a shout after Weds next for mote info.

Opened one of the bottles I got for Christmas last night, Tobermory 10 year old. Pleasant enough, but I don't think I'd buy another bottle.

I finally got around to digging out and documenting my Whisky collection.

Which contains:-

Bunnahabhain 18
Glen Marcnoch 18
Glen Marcnoch 24
Glen Marcnoch 24
Glen Marnoch 12
Glenfiddich 12
Glenmorangie Madeira Wood Finish
Glenmorangie Nectar Dor 12
Glenmorangie Traditional 100 proof
Glenmorangie 10
Highland Park 12
Highland Park 12
Isle of Jura 10
Johnny Walker Gold Label 18
Johnny Walker The Spice Road
Laphroaig 15
Makers Mark Bourbon
Talkisker 10
The Arran Bottle 231 of 234
The Balvenie Carribean Cask 14
The Glenlivet French Oak Reserve 15
The Glenlivet 18
The Glenlivet 12
The Macallan Gold
The Singleton 12
Woodford Reserve Bourbon

I some how have 3 bottles of Glenmorangie Traditional 100 proof, which is an excellent tipple. Two opened and one brand new. Amazong is selling it for £202.49 a bottle now (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glenmorangie-Traditional-100-Proof-litre/dp/B002EPDHWM) , so a good little investment, but if someone wants to make me an offer I'd be tempted to let it go, as there's only a certain amount of whisky a man can drink :-)
