Glenlivet 12 will be getting discontinued in March ...
Interesting.

Do you know what they will be replacing it with?

No huge loss (not a fan of Glenlivit) but I will surprised when there are any 10 or 12yo on the market at all. All of the distilleries seem to waiting to bottle at later stages as well as increasing the prices for older bottlings. What this will do for the overall quality of whisky will be very interesting.

Due to demand, they seem to be moving towards NAS bottlings.

Existing 10yo bottlings seem to be going up in price. Case in point - Aberlour 10. 4 years ago it was routinely priced at £18 - now it's closer to £30 (although often discounted).

Any recommendations for stuff to look out for when travelling? I was set on getting a Bowmore Tempest #4, but we're off to Bruges at the end of the month and thought I might wait and see what I find on my travels.

I know a lot of the distilleries produce stuff specifically for the travel retail markets but are there any gems?

The Glenfiddich stuff is nothing special, sadly.

Balvenie do a 16 triple cask (purchased, but not opened yet). Glenmorangie Dornoch is a travel retail dram (need to collect from mr_tony!). Glenlivit do a Nadurra that's travel retail and Aberlour do a 15 Double cask (not tried either).

You can probably tell I'm a Speyside man...

One of the benefits of 'Travel Exclusives' is that the bottles tend to be 1 litre and not 70cl.

The Glenlivit Nadurra isn't the same strength as the normal retail bottle, 53% v 60%ish IIRC.

A couple of travel gems are the Lagphroaig PX and the Talisker Dark Storm.

I keep hearing conflicting reports about whisky sales. Some research I saw recently showed the value of Scottish exports increasing, while the volumes decreasing. If we are in a boom, surely there must follow a crash? Could the rise of gin be a leading edge of that?

If we do hit a bust and the world's whisky appetite moves elsewhere, what would happen to the maturing stocks? Would it restore older expressions and cause prices to dip too?

All in bold are very, very good. Managed to drink a bottle of the Dark Storm in 2 days during the summer (with some help) and the Aberlour last a couple of hours between 4! Goes very well with a cigar too.

Not managed to get my paws on an Aberlour yet... which is quite distressing as it's one of our favourites!

Picking up the phone and speaking to Robbie is well worth it. Another PHer pointed me in his direction recently and it seems like it will be a fruitful connection - great guy and knows his stuff.
