I'm far from a whiskey connoisseur but I do like to drink it (with ice, not neat). I have a friend heading to japan soon and he's willing to get me a reasonably nice whiskey. Can anyone suggest any? nothing too expensive, around the equivalent of maybe £30-40.

Hibiki 12 or Nikka from the Barrel are both excellent and if the exchange rate is in your favour they should be in budget.

Hibiki 12, Nikka Blends, Hakushu any of those should be good. Hibiki 12 is lovely, plums and pineapple. Try it on its own, no ice or water as I think the Hibiki flavours break down if you add anything to it

Good stuff, let us know how you get on with it. Cracking neat or with a small splash of water.
Had a couple of drams now from this. It needs to calm down a little yet (I always prefer my spirits once they've had chance to breathe a little) but first impressions are very, very good.

It's much more complex than anything else I've tried yet, and that's down to the smokiness. Nice long creamy finish, sweet on the nose and a sweet, salty, smoky flavour (I'm not that great at pin-pointing and describing flavours!).

Absolutely love it - just need to not get through too much too quickly as I'd like to give it that time to air a little. But then we're getting into rum season so I'll be re-stocking those supplies soon which will serve as some distraction smile

My wife just picked up a bottle of Clontarf 1014 single malt from Aldi for £19.99. Anybody tried it? smile

Had this at a World Whiskies blind tasting night late last year - whisky of the night for me, by some margin.

Would have to agree!

Trying some Miyagikyo 12 this evening. Have to say it's very nice, although ideally for me the finish would be a bit fuller.

I picked up a bottle In the Whisky Exchange when I was in today, and for a sherry-head it is a very, very nice whisky. It's bottled at close to 58%, so needs a bit of water to open up.

I'm a bit of a fan of oloroso casket whiskies, and loved the standard Kavalan, so this one's a perfect match..

I promised myself I wouldn't add to the cupboard, but this is sounding very tempting!

hehe

No, I haven't.

Had a look through the cupbaord last night and it's a bit shocking... yikes

Need to "tidy up" some open bottles and get started on some of the unopened ones!

Anyone tried Talisker Skye? Opinion seems to be divided whether it's a pleasant drop or a cynical marketing exercise
I would be interested to hear opinions on this as well, I saw it in the shops the other day and considered it!

Talisker is a firm favourite of mine, only tried the standard one and the 6 year old Hepburns Choice though.

It's actually come on sale here in Norway for £130... very tempted too, despite being in the same situation!

As promised -

Colour - Dark and mouth-watering raisin

Nose - Clean and complex with muilt-layers of dried fruit, nuttiness and spices with some marzipan and vanilla touches to it as well.

Palate - Rich, oily and full with pleasant dried fruit and spices that linger on in the mouth plus a hint of fine coffee.

For reference, the above is not my notes, however, I will absolutely take full credit for them hehe

I added a splash of water (2 drops) and it opened it up even more. A very nice dram indeed - definitely one for the sherry lovers (Mr Podie cough cough)
