Oooh cheers for the heads up; I've tried the Ardbeg and wasn't a huge fan. What of the others should I look out for?
I need to buy milk on my way home so could accidentally walk down booze aisle...
The Doublewood is nice. I've not road tested the others yet, so can't comment on them.I need to buy milk on my way home so could accidentally walk down booze aisle...
Ardbeg is a Bovril whisky, you either love it or hate it. For me it's one of my favourites :-)
Heads up for anyone who did not get the Ardbeg Perpetuum. It is available to pre-order from http://www.moethennessy-selection.co.uk/en-GB/ardb...
Seems to be a different label and bottled at 47.4% instead of 49.2% though.

Hi Folks
I know absolutely nothing about whisky other than that on the handful of occasions in my life that I've had it, I've liked it!
I want to buy a nice bottle to celebrate moving into our new home, up to about £30-35 price range - what would you recommend?
Best to assume I know nothing about it really! I presume the "done thing" is to drink it neat or just with ice?

Personally I'd suggest something not too smoky at this stage:-
Old Pulteney 12 year old
Highland Park 12 year old
unless you already know you like smoky, in which case try one of the following:-
Talisker 10 year old
Laphroaig 10 year old
Some good deals on currently at Tesco if you want to go to the shops, and failing that one of the following sites :-
https://www.thegreenwellystop.co.uk/whiskyshop/ (usually the best prices, but not quite as much choice as the following 2)
https://www.masterofmalt.com
https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com
If you want reliable tasting notes in the form of entertaining video, you can choose from this guys Vlog, he covers most of the single malts and a lot more besides (he's up to Vlog number 536 now!).

Ralfy is a legend, very knowledgeable and doesn't get tainted by the corporate bullst.

Thanks for that, that's great! Like I said, my knowledge is pretty much zero, so happy to take your recommendation! Sainsburys seems to have Old Pulteney 12 for £23 which looks good to me! :-)Personally I'd suggest something not too smoky at this stage:-

Yes that's a fantastic deal for Old Pulteney. It's one of those whisky's I keep going back to, a charming introduction to your whisky career :-)
Enjoy.

Well the theory is that ice cools the whisky and reduces the flavour, it also numbs your taste buds, so either add a drop of water (preferably spring water) or take it neat.Best drunk....neat? With ice?
Personally when I get a new bottle I take it neat initially and if it needs it add a few drops of water.
However.....
If you want/like ice with it, don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
Drinking whisky is a personal thing, and nobody should tell you what's good/bad or how to do it.
Just make sure you enjoy it.
Remember there are no bad whisky's, just some better than others ;-)

Time for a dram this evening, I think.
