Is your one the Distillery release or the lower abv std one? I imagine both are smashing, even my non whisky drinking skipper on the boat thought how good it was.

The Joker I take it?

I tried some a couple of weeks ago and it is one for the collection and not for drinking IMO.

I have got back from a week sailing around the Western Islands. Managed to anchor off Ardberg and get a few Perpetuum. Had tried it in the pub in Port Ellen the night before, lovely stuff, one of the nicest whisky I have had of late. Also got a Springbank 18, so a good week in all.
Sounds a fantastic trip and a good way to have a whisky tour! biggrin

Seems to be all the reviews have been good so far.

Great whisky, but a shame the distillery didn't even package the bottle with a basic box.

I quite like the little hangtag of info with it! I was also tempted but the 2014 supernova return they had on the shelves. You were limited to two bottle even in their shop, and it cost me a round of bacon butties for the cre. We had to anchor off as the tide was dropping and get rowed ashore! They really need a proper pontoon there.

I must say, I'm in something of a quandary over Ardbeg day this year. The last few, I've dutifully trotted off to the whisky shop early Saturday morning to get my bottle, but the Perpetuum on-line sale left a rather bitter taste in my mouth, and the dawning realisation that I've got several bottles now tucked away, for what?

I think the standard bottle won't be nearly as collectable as the Committee release, so I may as well drink it, but £80 is a lot!

Anyone else losing the Ardbeg limited release shine?

I know what you mean. I would be going along to my local shop this year but I have to run a marathon this Saturday! Having said that, my GF and I have 4 distillery bottles between us plus I have pre-ordered the general Ardbeg Day release so will have 2 bottles waiting for me at my parent's house.

So minor report from the Feis Ile..

Lots of tastings in so far...

Lagavulin - their Feis Ile is lovely stuff although the Port Ellen 2014 release if you can get a sample is sublime... Although the £2000 odd price for a bottle is a tad scary.

Bruichladdich - Feis Ile tasting (High Noon) is very very pleasant ( in a 0.5L bottle)- although the dram for me was Jim McEwans 'special cask' - Sample 2 on his masterclass - good job I took my wife (non-whisky drinker) so I've got samples to take home. smile its a 1992 which was had been finished in a La Fleur cask - gorgeous.

The 2008 Octomore in virgin oak was lovely and also highly rated (by me anyway) was a 2002 Port Charlotte finished in a Y'Quem cask.

Caol Ila - 17 year old Feis Ile bottling - a triple matured beast. I could see this being a dangerous dram - just sit down and have one, then another, then another......nice taste and punch after it goes down.

The Laphroaig had a nice selection and their Cairdeas for 2015 is I think better than the 2014 - not as sharp as I expected a typical Laphroaig to be and it came as a bit of a surprise.

Bottle count purchased so far...Six. It's off to Jura tomorrow... smile

Comically - we were chatting today and we thought it had been a quiet day at Laphroaig from a dramming perspective but we've added up that we'd had about 10 drams. Yes we were right - it's been a quiet day smile

I refuse to play the "limited release" pantomime, be it Ardbeg, or anyone else.

To me, alarm bells ring very loudly when a producer (of anything) starts promoting investment and using
marketing terms like "limited release" etc etc.

Very Franklin Mint to me, so I avoid it and hope it will go away, I certainly don't subscribe, thats for sure.

Methinks some producers have overshot the mark , big time. TWE was recently offering the current(?) Port Ellen release
on promo, £300 off, £900 instead of the previous £1200 demanded by Diageo. Bargain eh?

Diageo seem to have done this with a lot of their releases. Another example is the Talisker 1985 I have. Was around £500 in the UK, I got it for £250 elsewhere, and it goes for around £300 in auctions. The Port Ellen stuff seemed to increase hundreds (or by a thousand with the latest if I remember right) each release for no other reason than they "can". The thing is it appears that the public don't agree, and so they're not selling.

Update from Jura.

First time on the island and it's a lovely little place. For such a small distillery the day was well organised, civilised and plenty of tastings to be had.

Their Tastival bottling is lovely from both a taste and also colour perspective.

It's an 18year old, four time matured bottle. First in Oak for about 14 years... then about year each in a sparkling red, white and then rose cask from Saumur, France.

This ones definitely one to be savoured.

Their food pairing tasting we went to was sublime - the Broth, Venison Wellington, Duck and Ganache worked perfectly with their Origin, Prophecy, Superstition and the Diurachs Own.

Having a good day. I was out shopping in Waitrose and happened to notice (as you do) they had a bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh Batch #41 on the shelves (current batch is #50), alongside more recent stock.
They said it was old stock :-), but were clearly unaware that batch numbers have any meaning.

So that's another one for the collection. I now have 2x#50 (1 open), 1x47 and this #41.
One of my favourites, and I love being able to sample earlier batches without paying crazy money.
Managed to get a bottle of 49 at my local waitrose today.

What a fantastic dram, amazing value even at full price.
It can't be long before they put the price up to compete with the Ardbeg's of this world.
Enjoy batch #49, I'm sure it will be awesome.

SMWS have just released a "Dark, smouldering flamenco gypsy" for the FEIS ILE 2015. So I've bought one!

The notes for this -

Wow – so much on the nose – sherry, tarry wood, clean smoke, dates, figs, roasted chestnuts, Christmas spices, egg custard, maple syrup-glazed pork ribs and HP sauce on bacon rolls. The palate was substantial – liquorice, treacle toffee, coffee and chocolate, with caramelised onions and Demerara-smothered, clove-studded ham over embers. The reduced nose suggested spiced prunes, Branston pickle, fig rolls, treacle tart, duck in plum sauce and warm welly boots by a dying bonfire. The reduced palate’s smoke and sherry combination gave us interest and pleasure – the toffee and oloroso, toasted almonds and barbecued meats gave it a dark, smouldering flamenco gypsy personality.

Drinking tip: Between dances at a Spanish barbeque party..

Nose: Full on and intense, with a backbone of smoke and minerality. On top of that sits chocolate covered caramel, cherry Tunes and smouldering ferns, with black wine gums, liquorice and leather hiding underneath. As it sits in the glass it picks up more meaty tones, with sweet-cured bacon and barbecue sauce sitting in the midst of the smoke. A drop of water softens things, and releases some gently floral notes: sugared rose petals and a hint of parma violet.

Taste: Gently perfumed, with a touch of parma violet, although that is quickly overcome with intense fruit. Dried raisins and cherries, menthol and liquorice, spiced fruitcake, leather and tar. It’s initially hot, but develops some damp oak and dark chocolate as it calms down on the palate, along with bung cloth, a touch of brine and coal dust. It takes water well, losing some of the heat but maintaining the intensity of flavour, while adding sweetness and a little more menthol.

Finish: Lots of char to start, with blackcurrant sweets developing. Damp oak and liquorice appear, but the blackcurrant remains throughout, slowly fading to a lingering sweet smokiness.

I am having a dram of #49 batch myself right now. First time since opening it at Christmas. Lovely with a drop of water to open it up. Cherries, dark brown sugar, pepper notes, oak and sherry on the tongue. Wonderful.
