Batch 5. Huge amounts of oak and vanilla with everything else taking a back seat. For me it's missing something though, almost a bit one dimensional despite being cask strength. I had the standard release small batch bourbon cask last week too and for me the Tempest wasn't much different once a drop of water was added (though on reflection that's hardly surprising!!). Nice enough, but I won't be buying another bottle.
Interesting. I enthuse about the batch 3, stonking stuff. From what you say it sounds as if the batches vary greatly. Good job I got plenty of the 3 in the stash . biglaugh

Ardmore Legacy 70cl, down from £30 to £20
Glenmorangie 10 year old 70cl, down from £35 to £25

I thought my selection was dwindling, so I took an opportunity to add to it (then got home and realised I had some unopened bottles left):

Aultmore 25 y/o
MoM Bruiclladich Single Cask Series 12 y/o
anCnoc Cutter
anCnoc Tushkar
BB&R Aberlour 19 y/o (1994), single cask bottling at 54.1%, American Oak

Looking forward to tucking into the BB&R and Aultmore I think!

Does anyone believe in this supposed Suntory shortage. They have released the Hibiki Harmony a NAS which I'm tempted to try. But my usual Hibiki 12 and 17 appears to be in constant shortage. I've just purchased another 17 but it was limited to 1 bottle per person and several other online shops are out of stock and have been for an age. If you can find it, its normally well over £100 now and a Scottish Whisky Auction site has a bottle at £105 and the auction isn't over yet.

Is this stuff now too popular and they're running out of the good stuff. Then putting it all in the younger NAS ? I'm keeping my 17 and last bottle of 12 unopened I think for awhile

Muchas Gracias, good price on the Bulleit, a good "cooking" bourbon that, not particularly complex, but very tatsty. On the other hand, not had any HP12 for years, decisions, decisions.

TWE still have the 4th release in stock, apparently. Approx 50 notes a go.

Sorry about the Highland Park typo above, of course it's the 12 year old not 10.
Some good prices though, just waiting to see if the competition (Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons) jump on the bandwagon, before I commit my hard earned :-)

Personally, every since Big Jim said the Yamazaki was his Whisky of the year, the jap whisky went bananas. I have tried the Hibiki 17 and must admit it's a nice dram.

I was lucky enough to get my nuts on a bottle of the Yamazaki Sherry and the 18. The Sherry is definitely up there with one of my favorites. Again personally, I think it will calm down in time, but I might be completely wrong. All the whiskys seem to be going NAS which is a real shame IMO.

It happened before Jim awarded the 2013 Sherry Cask overall honours. I used to drink through a lot of the Yamazaki 18 when it cost around 60 quid a bottle. It used to be one of the cheapest 18yo that you could buy. The Hibiki 17 was also an everyday dram but I moved onto the 21 which was occasionally troublesome to get but now it is very, very rare and if you do find a bottle it will cost around 250 quid. Used to be around 70.

Unfortunatly the Japanese do not export much and as it has become more popular there are less bottles up for grabs. It is a really crap situation as I bought a bottle of the 1984 with the intention of waiting for a good day to open it but now it will be sold as it is just to valuable to drink.

Think it was 69 Euros from the Celtic Whisky Shop in Dawson Street - not available at the airport. Just another tip - they have a good selection at the airport of Irish Whiskey but allow yourself time to shop. Security seemed very tight and by the time we got through plus the q in the duty free shops there was very little time left. Good job I'd stashed the GS in the suitcase.

Doing the Caledonian Challenge this weekend. Needed something for my hip flask though I'm not a regular whisky drinker, despite living in Scotland for 8 years! I know I prefer smokey, island whiskies and fancied a treat.

Read some reviews on here and other sites and went for a Lagavulin 16 from waitrose. May have stretched to a Talisker 18 but they didn't have any in. Was also tempted by Jura susuperstition for 22 quid with 2 free glasses.

Some Belgian beers included for good measure.

Opened it already, can't believe how smooth it is compared to a 10yo.

It also depends on the distillery - not sure what you have had previously, but some companies deliberately make whisky "bombs" to pack a punch rather than the smoothness of Lagavulin.

cleared the decks over the weekend, with some dogends of Bowmore 10, Aberlour 10 and a lovely bourbon called noah's mill all getting finished off. So, got me these:

Bowmore 15 Darkest (finally got some after wanging on about it for ages)

Arran Amarone Cask Finish (thread recommendation, thanks whoever that was!)

and on the prowl for bourbon ideas... i've seen black maple get mentioned a lot. Need to do some research!

Let us know what you think of the Darkest.
I've been after a bottle for a while. I even ordered one of The Green Welly store, but they were out of stock and had to refund me.
I was hoping to see it reduced in Tesco as they stock it, but I've never seen it less than about £54 there.
