I had a Delamain Vesper 35 year old last weekend, was bloody lovely. I need a bottle. Solid value at $200 US as well.

BTW, for those that read the newsletter, my Monkey Shoulder team got an almighty skewering by the Whiskysponge boys this week. I've been chuckling at their stuff for years and am proud we hit their radar...but yes we got burned smile

I need to post them a shirt that says "y lolz"....

Kavalan Soloist - Find
Can I thank the guys at Kavalan who delivered the Fino in error (rather than the Bourbon) for tonight's Kavalan tasting in York.

Thanks to the offer of a very cheap Eurotunnel crossing, we headed over to Bruges for the day and as well as some sightseeing, the car was loaded up with some Belgian beer, and other stuff you don't seem to see on this side of the channel..no Hoegaarden, but some Leffe, Brugse Zot, and other stuff!!

This also included a few additions to the whisky collection - two Belgian single malts, and a sherry finish Armorik, as well as some more unusual beers including some Dutch whisky cask finished stouts and a barley wine..



I'd been hoping to pick up a bottle of Belgian Owl during the summer, so decided to pick up the 36-month shown in the centre. There's arguably a stong Scottish influence in this as there stills were previously in the now demolished Caperdonich distillery, and the casks used for this are PX cask that previously held Glendronach..

The other Belgian malt is from Het Anker's Stokerij de Molenberg, who are better known for their beer - the mash used is basically the Gouden Carolus Tripel beer (on the right). The Fado Vivo I picked up is a five year old finished for two years in port casks

I've already opened this one, and despite the young age the port gives it a pretty long finish - might have to source another!!

The beer (Meneer de Uil) gets a mention as they are finished in different casks, in this case Ledaig, Clynelish and Bowmore and the barley wine in Mortlach. The Ledaig-casked has picked up a lot of character form the cask, so is a pretty smoky imperial stout that was as good as some similar whisky casked imperial stouts I've had from Brewdog..

I'm one of the regulars - a chance to get to taste a number of different drams without committing to buying a bottle. Depends on the availability of a local bar with a good range of drams on offer allowing you to experience at wider spectrum - and also you know the bottle will be freshly opened so you don't loose out re bottles that have been sat half empty for a while.

Last nights Fino was a special - not all the groups in this tasting will get to taste the Fino (@£270 per bottle) - reserved for home territory. But you can get such a wide spectrum - when else could you experience a Big Black Cock ! A very good Aussie dram not available in this country. Sometimes its more mundane, but there is always a theme and Joe has the knowledge / experience to present the evening.

Strangely enough it looks like Sweden might get the new Ardbeg Dark Cove before the UK does! The Committee release version will go on sale on the 31st of March for around £76. There should be 1300 bottles of the committee release (don't think that number was just for Sweden). I can only assume if it is an Feis Isle bottling that they won't be delivered for a while, otherwise it is somewhat odd. There's also a review of it in Swedish (the weird translation parts I have no idea about either!):

Fragrance:
Quite a mighty oak which, however, feels relatively kind anyway, beans, caramel, black pepper and cocoa. Nice on the scent. Smokiness is there and actually pulls slightly to the meat entirely, something I usually find in Port Charlotte and Octomore. Candied orange peel for a while in the glass. All woven together with an underlying carpet of Ardbegs nice smokiness. A little leather at the end.

Taste:
Sulfurtoner right, I like that. Easy gunpowder, more coffee, a fairly balanced ekighet and a rather large mouth feel. The aftertaste is long and spirited with good peppery. On the whole, the whiskey feels quite young but it is hidden well of sulfurtonen and smokiness. It sounds like a sweet and pretty intense smoke which again tightens charcuterie.

Clearly better than expected, although there are some young angular units. Very nyek usually bother me but here I think the oak plays a pretty nice role.
It is not close out old Ardbeg and its fabulous flavors but for 899: - I think it still is an affordable whiskeys that most will like. I protruding chin and says that Ardbeg Dark Cove is far better than Uigeadail. At least in my mouth.

Ardbeg day is the 28th May. Strange that it would be released in the Scandie countries so early.

Still a bit strange - don't think I have seen it before. It could well be deliveries are later. I guess Norway will be in May or later since the next release is a week tomorrow which is too early I would suspect.

I visited High West distillery today, up at 7000ft in Utah.

Its a stunning facility, impeccably designed. Their range is very pleasant too, especially the Campfire (an unusual blend of American Rye with peated Scotch) and the Midwinter Nights Dram, finished in Port and French Oak casks, but there was one tiny thing that bugged me - their whiskies are oerwhelmingly blends of other distilleries spirits, but the tour doesnt take you to a blending room, or talk about who does the blending, or really highlight the skills involved - its a very pleasant, quick tour of a functioning distillery.

Other than that, highly recommended if you skiing in Park City and fancy some tourism!
