Well, in the last few days I have acquired:

Highland Park 21 (not tasted yet - only got it an hour ago)
Johnnie Walker Gold Label (Great stuff)
Bruichladdich Octomore (Peaty you say? yikes )
Bruichladdich X4 (Not tried yet either)

Been a good weekend!

Since my house has been a whisky free zone since I finished my bottle of 18 year Talisker the other week, I've just ordered this and this. yum

So my collection will be looking decidedly Talisker-heavy for a while, but what the hell, it's good stuff. Plus I'll be heading up to Scotland again in June/July, so I plan to broaden my horizons and try a few other drams while I'm there, after which I may well add to my collection.

Incidentally, I'm planning on visiting a distillery while I'm in Scotland, possibly Isle of Jura or Talisker (naturally!). Any thoughts or recommendations?
Good work! I love Talisker but only have 3 in my collection at the mo - I really should do something about it.

Soooo.

PH Distillery tour sometime?

if you just want to buy an approachable scottish whiskey, try Monkey Shoulder or Glenrothes Select Reserve - both are approachable, smooth and good value at 20 quid a bottle.
nono

But good call on Monkey Shoulder. Johnnie Walker Black (or Green for an extra fiver) is amazing and good value.

I drink the boggo 10yr old Talisker as my regular sip, just emptied a bottle a moment ago.

Going to be trying something very new and different next weekend.

Talisker is generally my favourite, but having loads of rellies from Skye means I have it all too often tbh.

Lefty - did you see my post on the previous page ref: my latest purchase? Would be interesting to know what you think, I assume you've tried 99.9% of all available whiskies ever!

The Tobermory? No I haven't only one I've treid (other than a few Ledaigs) is the bog-basic 10yo and it's pretty good.

I'm afraid I haven't tried anything like the 99.9% you suggest - I am but an enthusiastic amateur!

Looks like good value though, let us know what you think of them.

I'm on Glen Garioch (my other local distillery) tonight. It's an 8 year old that I've only tried once before. Damn good stuff, IMHO one of the best sub-£20 malts around.

Supernova out now.

Its not been out at Ardbeg yet but the main specialists started selling on Monday. Royal Mile and Loch Fyne sold out in twenty four hours (mine should arrive from Loch Fyne tomorrow). Whisky Exchange still has some. 80 quid including the p&p.

Shame I haven't got an Octomore to try side by side - the bank balance can only stand so much.

Mentioning something else to try - anyone else tried Buffalo Trace - very nice Yank dram and just over £20. A lot of the BT casks end up on Islay - especially at Bruichladdich - so worth having in the cupboard.

If you want to try the above the first Newcastle Festival is on 9th May - next weekend. Run by Eddie Ludlow - the 'Evangelist'. I've been to York festival before which is where Eddie started, and it was very good - Newcastle looks to be three times the size. At a tasting last weekend Eddie was both looking forward to Newcastle - and a bit worried. Not sure if the Ardbeg masterclass is sold out yet but its always the most popular and of course includes Supernova. Wish I was going but the wife is off to Wembley (York City) and someone has to stay home with the dogs.

Here's waiting for tomorrow and the Supernova - plus 10th wedding anniversary - and the old Merc is officially out for the summer.

Tried the Green in a blind tasting last weekend. Came in as a good session dram. I would certainly prefer to something like Monkey Shoulder - but it is at least a fiver more.

And in the blind tasting it beat a Longrow 18yo which costs five times the money at well over a ton. The Longrow was bottom of the six drams - as it was at another tasting Eddie L. had run. Only one tasting put the Longrow elsewhere - as the best dram. Manchester I think - different palettes out West - and cr@p football teams.

It was a Japan vs Scotland - three of each - the Japs won - this time.

Well Lefty, I've just finished my beer, my wine and my Chinese. The Ardbeg is calling. Ssssshh, I can hear her, she's calling me.

Hello beautiful! Shall we get acquainted?
Which Ardbeg was it? Did you enjoy it? laugh
The beer, wine and no-doubt MSG in my chinese takeaway clearly had an effect on my ability to differntiate between Ardbeg and Ardmore. It was actually the latter and it was excellent, as ever.

I need another bottle but would like a recommendation for something similar at less than £25. Any suggestions Lefty?

Thanks DBSV8, will give that a go at some point. I ended up buying another bottle of Ardmore from Sainsbury's for £19.99. My local whisky specialist is a rip-off merchant as my first bottle was £26!

Lefty or any other whiskey guru, is there any chance you can recommend me a nice single malt please?

First time drinker, (well have had glenfiddich single malt before) so i would ideally like something very smooth and nice and sweet as i have a sweet tooth, And if possible £25-£30 max?

Almost certainly Redbreast or MaCallan's Fine Oak 10 yo - last time I had it, it was in a white box, but they may have changed their packaging to the silver it's in now, unless the white one is a different 10 yo.
Still very nice, but Redbreast is my current favourite.

Hmmm, funny one the 10yo Fine Oak, I don't rate it at all. The Fine Oak 15 is absolutely amazing and, despite the fact I'm not generally a fan of the Macallan, rates as one of my favourite drams.

For a top-notch sweet dram at a good price see the Ardmore that Pferdestarke is on about above.
