Oh, and has nobody mentioned topping off the BM with dry sherry floated on top
Re-read Mobile Chicane's recipe Edited by Semi hemi on Saturday 23 May 18:22
Something I'd not considered before, sounds good.
The recipe I tend to stick to:
2 ounces of 42 below vodka
1 ounce of Tio Pepe sherry
4 ounces tomato juice
1/2 ounce lemon juice
4 dashes of Worcester sauce
2 grinds of black pepper
2 dashes of celerly salt
2 dashes of Tabasco (or to taste)
grated horseradish (optional)
Combine all these ingredients together with ice in a Boston glass and tin and 'roll' the mixture. Stirring is not sufficient to mix all the ingredients together and shaking bruises the tomato juice too much.
Garnish with a lemon wedge and fresh celery.

Learnt the dry sherry/red wine ingredient many years ago.

What about the tomato juice?lots of vodka (horseradish if you can find it!)

Here are some variations:
2 (46 ounces) cans tomato juice
1 (10 ounce) can beef bouillon
1 teaspoon coarsely-ground fresh black pepper
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon Accent seasoning (MSG), optional
4 ounces lemon juice
1 (5 ounce) bottle Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
Tabasco sauce to taste (for heat)
Combine tomato juice, beef bouillon, pepper, celery salt, Accent (if using), lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco sauce. Mix thoroughly. Refrigerate.

^^^ Where from?
Makro always seem to have it - if you're struggling to find it? I thought it was fairly common and easy to find though? In the interest of science I have been investigating the bloody Mary this week and I have to say that even with the bare minimum of ingredients
vodka
tomato juice
Tabasco sauce
Worcester sauce.
Lemon
if you get the ratio's wrong then it is screwed. All the above multitude of ingredients in the posts above is a bit like adding loads of things to a hot dog - at some point you take away from the pure simplicity of a pork sausage and bread roll. Ying and Yang and all that.
So my perfect Bloody Mary -
1/3 pint vodka
2/3 pint tomato juice.
Large handful of crushed ice
6-12 drops of Tabasco depending on taste
Blend till smooth.
Et voila, a pint and a half of this lovely concoction on a cold winters night.

I've been sinking the odd bloody mary or two over the last month. I've got my recipe sussed:
1/3 Vodka (approx 3 normal measures)
2/3 Tomato juice
Pinch of sea salt
Good grind of pepper
4 or 5 drops of tabasco
a little sploosh of Worcestershire sauce
Ice
Stir vigorously and enjoy.
It works for me anyway.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I've recently been trying different BM recipes to find one I really like.
Tried Big Tom, Clamato, regular juice, some spiced juice from Waitrose which wasn't particularly nice. Any other recommendations?
For me, it needs to be relatively heavy on Worcestershire, Tabasco and celery salt. Still find it's missing something though even with the lemon/lime and sherry additions.
If you've been to The Sir Charles Napier restaurant near High Wycombe and had a BM there, you'll know they are pretty special, but do you know their recipe? It's the taste I've been trying to match for years.
For a quick and lazy BM, I have to say a big shot of this in Big Tom or regular juice comes close:
Any other ideas?

Big Tom and the other brands mentioned above pale into comparison against Mr & Mrs T's Bloody Mary Mix. It is hard to find in the UK but if you can get it you won't want your BM with anything else. Sublime stuff. The original is still the best but they do Horseradish, Fiery Pepper and a few other flavours now.
I love a good BM! I had one at Feastival last year made with chilli vodka, bloody nice.
I also love this, apologies thats its stolen from the FTT.

Best I had was at the Butterfly Lounge at the Hotel Majestic in San Francisco, the barman there, Mike, was great, would take his time (a good 5 minutes or so) over each and every drink, with it being quite a small lounge, it wasn't a problem that you had to wait a bit. We stayed there and probably had 3 or 4 cocktails with him every night, just letting him wheel out whatever he suggested.
The Bloody Mary he made with tomato juice that he'd made up himself with freshly roasted tomatoes, got the kitchen to make up extra crispy bacon and a skewer of king prawns, blackened the chillis with a torch and basically went to town on the whole affair, as was his thing. It was incredible, OTT perhaps, but I doubt it'll be topped.

According to Kingsley Amis who knew a thing or two about drink and drinking, the secret to a great Bloody Mary is to add a little tomato ketchup and stir vigorously into the tomato juice, Tabasco, Worcestershire etc before adding the vodka and giving it another brief stir. I loathe tomato juice so cannot comment as to the results.
