(Bump)

Cocktailheads - mixology matters

Inspired by the What aperitif? thread, I thought I should be more adventurous and give the cocktail shaker and glasses I was given as a housewarming present (but hardly use) an outing.

A mammoth trip to Waitrose means that I now have the ingredients for all of:

Belvedere vodka martini - olive, twist or onion
Mojito
Margarita
Manhattan
Americano
Moscow mule
Bloody Mary/Maria (with tequila)

Which cocktails do you make and drink at home?

Recipes please.

I make most of the ones i recommended on this thread for parties etc pretty regularly, especially over new years, christmas etc.

Manhattans, Show me the Monkey, Monkey Mojitos all go down well.

A decent gin martini (Hendrick's gin, noilly prat and not too dry) go down well too.

Add the lime juice to the mint and ice and shake it hard for a minute. Add the rum and the sugar. Serve with a lime wedge.
Icing sugar?

Bloody icing sugar? Is that when you make them with Value White Rum?

Sugar syrup - make your own

Its probably one of the hardest cocktails to get perfectly right the Mojito.
I find the trouble is with the fresh lime, you never seem to get two the same. The recipe I use also uses a dash of Angustora Bitters. The mint needs to be new shoots as well, the woody leaves don't release enough oil.

I much prefer a Mojito made with dark or brown rum.

Are there any cocktails that use the more 'flavoured' rums such as Sailor Jerry?

I agree that the Mojito is the hardest to get right.

I've been mashing the mint leaves together with the sugar, resulting an a rather unappetising-looking green goo.

Next time I'll try shaking them with the ice cubes and lime.

If you down it, you've missed the point entirely of it being called a cement mixer.

This weekend I have mainly been serving LadyV8 this cocktail; edited and personalised from a way too fancy recipe I found somewhere.

50ml Gin (I'm using Tanqueray No. Ten 47.3%)
25ml Dry sheery (Fino)
Juice of 1/2 a lime
35ml pineapple juice
35ml mango juice

A dozen ice cubes in a shaker. Add the gin and sherry; shake.
Then add the other three items, shake again; strain to serve (the drink, not the server!)

The two juices can be lengthened to 60ml each if you prefer a longer daytime drink.

I'll add my recipe for 'Pimm's'. (Thanks shirt.)

Very good indeed and certainly the cause of many nights' ruination:

lots of ice in a tall glass
3 parts gin
2 parts red vermouth
scant 1 part triple sec
chunked cucumber and orange
top off with soda water and a sprig of mint

Be careful not to have too many of these - overdoing any kind of 'vermouth' results in the most horrendous hangover.

You know, the one where you feel as though you're being stabbed between the eyes with a hot poker. frown

Simple mojito.

Mojito mix, extra white rum, plenty of crushed ice and limes.

Saves the disappointment of spending 10 minutes doing it from scratch only to be disappointed!

I really have a thing for an ice cold G&T at the moment. So crisp and refreshing and does not seem to leave me with a hangover!

Definitely not 'simple', but I present:

"The Australian by Luke Mangan"

COCKTAIL RECIPE

3x Lime segments
3x Lime leaf
2 slices Fresh ginger
MUDDLE THESE ALL TOGETHER
15 ml cognac
15 ml gin
15 ml cointreau
15 ml cranberry juice
15 ml syrup
(Which is 1litre water, 600g sugar, 6 cinnamon stick broken up, 200g peeled roughly cut ginger.60 kaffir lime leaves torn up, 150ml chardonnay vinegar bring all to the boil let cool and strain after 2 days.)

MIX ALL INGREDIENTS WITH LOTS OF ICE AND DOUBLE STRAIN. GARNISH WITH A BURNT LIME TWIST AND DRINK!

SERVED IN A MARTINI GLASS.

On a similar theme:

1 x premixed Jack Daniels and cola can
1 x glass

  • Open can
  • Pour in glass
  • Drink
Apart from the effort of opening the can, it's quite an easy cocktail. Why, even a "beginner" mix-master could have a stab at it.

Couple of champers variations which are somewhat effective.

Imperial Pimms - use Champagne instead of lemonade

Beverly Hills Iced Tea - use Champagne instead of coke (this is particularly effective, don't say I didn't warn you, alright?)
