I too have been watching the trees and considering a raid. I'm also thinking about trying to make a beer with sloes in it.

Looks like I need to be heading to my secret sloe stash over the next few days. The last time I cropped was 2005, the Sloe Gin I made has lasted me until now - down to my last bottle - I declared the vintage as 'outstanding', but this bottle is going to be special.

P.S - for those who don't know, you don't need to wait to the first frost. Sticking them in the freezer overnight will trick the sloes into thinking the first frost has taken place.

I've got 5 litres on the go at the moment.

3 with Gordons mid range Gin, 1 with an El Cheapo and 1 with Bombay Sapphire.

Been told that a splash of Almond essence makes all the difference so I'll do another litre with Gordons for that one.

I fear that I may actually go blind during my blind tasting session silly

I've picked a few kilos worth of sloes this weekend and they are now in the freezer. There are still left too smile

I've also this weekend bought 4 70cl bottles of Castelgy Club Dry Gin. I need more. I'll keep you all updated.

I have a small supply of sloe berries growing out the front of the house. What's the view on this week's heat-wave, will it help or should I pick now? I appreciate waiting for a frost is best!

If only you know they are there, I'd wait until the frosts.

I only pick earlier if there's a danger that someone else will beat me to it.

Once you've got your sloe gin, here's my favourite cocktail recipe: Cloudy Sky.

2 measures Sloe Gin
2 measures ginger ale
1 measure fresh lime juice

Lots of ice, preferably broken/crushed.

Yum.

Success! Thanks to a bit of Googling, I found a small blackthorn plantation very near to me and yesterday managed to pick almost 3 Kg of the little beauties. They're all in the freezer now.

Planning to make about 3 litres of sloe gin and 1.5 l of sloe vodka.

Just need to find the right containers and some good value alcohol and I'm on my way!

My googling has come up with nothing!
