Sloes to fill the required volume (approx a good mug sized ammount)
You want about 400g of sloes for that sugar / alcohol.

Thanks for the advice and don't think me rude when I say I've been making it to this recipe for 10 years and quite happy with it but i might just weigh what i use next time to clarify how much my good mug full is as it might help others

No offence taken, nor was any intended.

Personally I use 200g sugar, 400g sloes to 750ml of spirit.

No idea! I use 5 litre containers and make 2.5L at a time, then decant to bottles at a later date!

Edited to add - well I've made another bottle and my mug full of sloes is just over 300 gr so I'm going to try your recipe strength with some of the sloes I'd planned to keep just in case of a bad year next year.

I do it by eye, (and by the gallon) but that is nearer to my sugar/sloe ratio.

I've got 700ml of blackberry gin 5 weeks in already. Collected just under 2kg of sloes last week so got getting on for four litres of the stuff now stewing. Yummy. I definitely have a sweet tooth looking at some of the suggestions for sloe/sugar ratios above!

Still no frost in the south - are the sloes still good for picking?

Another 1.2kg picked this morning - so now have 3L of sloe gin, 750ml of sloe vodka, 750 ml of blackberry rum and 750ml of blackberry vodka on the go!

I tried some Sloe Gin for the first time earlier this year, from a batch a friend had made - lovely stuff. Then, last week I passed what looked like a bush with Sloes on it when I was out cycling. It's not in an obvious place so hasn't been picked at all.

So.... I've decided to have a crack at making my own (with the great advice on this thread ). Went back yesterday and collected 3 lb which are now in the freezer. The bush has at least another 5 lb on it but I'll leave that for someone else. I'll pop out tonight and get some bargain basement gin.

Our Elderflower gin is running out rapidly so the toughest bit will be keeping my hands off it while it matures !

Don't suppose you want to share the location (by PM, naturally...)? All my local sloes have been nabbed already. Too many people discovering the taste!

Mmmm, tough one smile I'm torn between helping out a fellow PHer and keeping my secret stash to myself !

Where are you ? It would help if you were far enough away that I could pretend to be willing but know that you wouldn't travel every year and strip it clean hehe

idea

The thought never occurred to me...

I'm near Camberley in Surrey, so you could be miles away but I'm starting to get desperate for a crop this year mainly because I was a bit too relaxed about harvesting the plantation just down the road from me and by the time I recce'd it, most of the fruit was gone. I won't be making that mistake again, so doubt I'll need to plunder your stash!

(but if i did, I'd be polite enough to let you know so we could share).

I was also a bit lazy in noting down the locations of some new finds when the blossom was out. Now I can't remember where they are, but next year I'll be geo-locating them for sure!

How are everyone's supplies looking? I went back to last year's bushes, which survived the poor conditions and they are bare this year!

I shall need to go and check site 2...

I've got a feeling we may have shared the same site 1 before... how is your site 2? Is there enough left to share...
