Chivas 18 is a lot better than JW green in my opinion, and it's the same price.

I haven't tried the 18yo Chivas. Isn't it more like the price of JW Gold? (£45-ish)

Johnnie Black is consumed in huge quantities out here in Asia along with Chivas Regal!!!

Most any bar you go into will have at least 5 or 6 "private" bottles behind the bar!
I used to do a lot of work with the Japanese and they were always anxious to get hold of Johnny Walker 'Swing'. We hadn't heard of it before then but diligent searching came up with it eventually. That Wikipdeia item mentions it too.
The bottle has a rounded bottom and it rocks to and fro.

Going to try the Johnie Walker Platinum I picked up for $65. I'm in the US so the Walker line up is different to the UK. I think the platinum replaced the gold. I'm not a big whisky drinker so can't give a qualified review.

I have Maccallan 10 that I normally drink and fond memories of Maccallan 21 to compare to though. This Platinum has a lot more going on. Is it oak and peat I taste?

Is this any good?

JW Black is the go to whisky for millions. It may not be anyone's absolute favourite, but it's universally popular (assuming you drink whisky). No one who drinks whisky dislikes it. If you want to give a gift or have people coming round you don't know, JW Black will always go down well.

Blended whisky is the best. Master blenders cover the gaping deficiencies of individual malts to create something better. When I was very young I preferred Red Label to Black Label, but this reversed with experience. Blue label is utterly sublime, I have drunk a lot of this. Vastly more complex and sophisticated than any single malt, which seem one dimensional in comparison.

Whilst vaguely on topic, Chivas can be bought often in supermarkets at what are silly prices. Sure the Aberlour shines through in the taste, but it is vastly more grown up than that single malt can ever be.

I had a spell of frequent trips to Japan and the revered brand then was Johnny Walker 'Swing'. This was in the mid-1970s. I was rendered pretty incapable by Suntory Red* by a Japanese colleague who invited me to his home - a rare honour.

  • Japanese 'cooking' whiskey akin to any mid-range blended Scotch in quality to my poor palate.

Green is the pick of the JW bunch. A blended malt, so superior ingredients, but good value. They tried to kill it and Gold (not a blended malt, but a very good blend as well) a few years back to focus on Platinum, to make the malt stocks go further. Platinum isn't really very exciting.

To me, JWB tastes soapy, and Double Black even more so, but I prefer peated Malts to peated Blends.

The slowdown in the Asian market means JW Green stock has become available again in Western markets. I would pick some up, it may go away permanently in the future, or at least get a lot younger.

If you like blends, its worth trying Teachers - probably the highest malt content of any of the blends at its price point, and its all from one distillery (Ardmore IIRC?)

Teacher's uses over 45% single malt, with Ardmore single malt (a heavily peated central Speyside single malt)[1] being the primary Scotch in its blend, along with about 30 other single malt whiskies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teacher%27s_Highland...

Are you still on here? Haven't seen you here for a while.

Good news about the JW Green as I am on my last 2 or 3 bottles so will need to pick some up again. The best vatted malt by far IMO.
