Myself and Mrs Black Sport 160 are going to be staying just outside Birmingham next weekend.

As a pair of real curry heads, we're intending to head to Sparkbrook one evening and eat in one of the Balti Houses.

Any recommendations as to the best?

Standards have slipped down there a little of late, but if you check out Birmingham Plus and search by restaurant type, you'll be able to take a look through recent reviews of some great places (and some less great!) which might help you pick.

To be honest not some where I would want too be parking my car anywhere in Sparkbrook or infact walking around there at all on the night time, just my opinion, I live about 5 Minutes drive in Shirley.

I can reccomend Lasan Eatery (its the same as Lasan that was on that Gordon Ramsey programe) thats in Hall Green area just up the Road,

If you want to goto Sparkbrook though I can reccomend Hajee's Spices on the Stratford road going through Sparkbrook.

Depending where you staying around Birmingham if you are anywhere near Solihull I can reccomend Ginger Blue, I have been several times on nights out with work and its great in there!

Or if you are near Stirchley I can recommend Akrams on the Pershore Road.

All of the above I have been too quite a few times and have really enjoyed!

Hope you find some where!

Not taking the Lotus....we'll be in the Aygo (nice & anonymous biggrin). Should manage to grab a parking spot very close to the eatery as we like to eat late in the evening.

They were very impressive on Gordon Ramsay. The menu on their website looks good too, and reasonably priced. May try there on Saturday, and a more 'traditional' Balti House on Sunday....like I say, we're curry addicts!

Other side, we'll be at Moor Hall Hotel just outside Sutton Coldfield. Don't mind in the slightest travelling for good food, though.

Probably be checking out a pub or two near Birmingham City Centre both evenings....some really good places listed in the Good Beer Guide.

Cheers!

I don't know how I could have forgotten Sweet Chillis !

Ample parking outside, easy to get to, some really unusual items on their menu as well as the regular things you'd expect - I normally have them deliver which is why I didn't think of them as a restaurant (although they are mainly a sit down restaurant).

Really - although I do go to Sparkhill/Sparkbrook occasionally (especially for Milans samosas!) Sweet Chilli's ticks all the boxes for me. I have tried Lasan Eatery which isn't that far from Sweet Chilli's, I found it disappointing in comparison.

The people in Sweet Chilli's are nice too. In fact, I'm quite hungry now lick

Edit to add: some of my family live over in Four Oaks & highly recommend The Lodge

The triangle is not very good now. Seriously, try Pangea in kings heath, none come close to this without paying silly money such as lasan.

A final couple of others suggestions - not been there myself yet, but will be going very soon. Not in Birmingham, but moreorless the same sort of distance away from Sutton Coldfield:

The Bilash, Wolverhampton Supposed to be very good.

and

Kababish, Sutton & Moseley I've only eaten in the Kings Heath one, but I thought it was pretty delicious. They've been around a long time, and have a pretty good reputation

Just saw the other 'Birmingham Curry' thread and remembered I never replied to the suggestions!

Only had curry one evening - first night the wife wanted to eat bland food in the hotel restaurant frown.

We ended up going to Lasan Eatery. Nice meal, although on balance we still prefer Tayabbs in London - we're used to the really strong, fiery tastes of Punjabi cuisine. Whereas I think Lasan is owned by Bangladeshis.

Alfrash seems to get good reviews. May try that one when next in Birmingham.

99% of the "Indian" restaurants in the UK are owned and run by Bangladeshis. If you want Punjabi food in Birmingham and you don't want to eat halal then I would highly recommend Channis in Sparkhill.
