Go down to Wickes and get a blow torch. Get some fire lighters from Tesco's or Sainsburys
In the bottom of your Webber put a circle of briquettes down and then the firelighters on top. Build a pyramid of charcoal on top. Use your blow torch to not only light your firelighters but warm the charcoal up. It will be roaring in no time.

I usually use dry kindling and paper to get my BBQ going - same as I would light a normal fire. If for some reason I have a bit of trouble, I have found a good use for an unused present - a gas powered blowtorch which was designed for making creme brulee. Giving the coals a good blast with this usually gets things going.
As for further tips, take a look at these threads too, they should give you something to aim for!

I usually use three Webber lighter cubes, make a little pyramid then light them with a match, go and have a beer and wait 20 mins and they should have taken.
Or you could buy a chimnery starter. Put the coals in the starter light a couple of lights cubes under it and it does the same thing but releaves you of £17

I invested in a chimney starter, saves all the messing about, especially the occasional dissapointment and major spanner in the works when you come back half an hour later to find it's gone out. Never had any problems with the chimney starter, always starts first time and gets things going with minimal effort - set up in a few mins, leave, come back a bit later to find it all happening as it should.
I think I do similar to what people above say. It's foolproof, every time. We used it in the pouring rain and gale-force winds at Reading Festival last year (we REALLY wanted those sausages).
So anyway, we did:
- Layer of charcoal on the bottom
- Three firelighters in a tight circle in the middle
- Light firelighters
-Build pyramid on top of them
- Robert is your mother's brother
