I had some shopping delivered last night which included a 1 litre bottle of olive oil. When I unpacked it I noticed that the bottle had lots of small blobs of white furry stuff in, which looked similar to mould. I took the bottle back to a store today (not the same one as the delivery came from) and the customer services assistant also looked at it in disgust, said she had seen it once before but didn't know what it was. I went to the shelf to get a replacement, only to find that the entire stock of 1 litre bottles of olive oil were exactly the same. I came away with a 500ml bottle because they were all fine.

Now, bearing in mind that ALL of the one litre bottles in the store were the same, and it was also a different store to the one which my shopping was delivered from, does olive oil have "natural sediment" that looks like white furry blobs? I've always bought the same brand of olive oil in the same size bottle but never come across it before. And why should it affect 1 litre bottles and not 500ml? It looks disgusting, so if it is natural sediment or something then I'm going to stop buying it from this store until they can produce bottles that are perfectly clear, like the smaller ones because it really was quite offputting.

The CSA said that the bottle I returned would remain in store and would be inspected by head office who then might contact the manufacturer if they think it was contaminated. I have been told to expect a call from head office so I'm hoping they will be able to tell me whether it is normal or not, but in the meantime has anybody else got any thoughts?

It's fairly normal - they are blobs of fat.

I seem to remember it's something to do with the temperature at which the oil has been stored/transported.

olive oil creates sediment when it sits in a bottle in a cold environment - the bottles were probably stored in a warehouse in the UK over winter

Cloudiness is temperature, and should vanish when it returns to its happy state of cool. The sediment is simply because they dont use industrial filtration or treat the oil to get rid.

If you want perfectly clear oil, might one recommend Spry? wink

Yep thats it, if the oild gets cold some of the fats in it condense as it warms up (cant remember the temperature - but lower than a summerd day)they get absorbed again - nothing to worry about..

Fresh delivery from the storage facility, they proabably run out of one size quicker than others. Stick your new clear bottle in the fridge and see what happens.

Sheesh, WW3 declared over a perfectly natural product. I'm having steak tonight and there's some funny white stuff on one edge; is it food poisoning?
