Basil plant smells strange after a month or two...

The last few basil plants we've had, fed council juice from the tap, seem to adopt a strange annaceed taste/aroma, different from what I believe it was like when bought.

Any light on this?

Sorry, don't think I've ever written that word before.

I got caught using my English GCSE paper to roll a novelty sized spliff, still got an E though!

...so I took that too.

Next thing I know, 8 years later, I'm here wondering why my basil plant smells/tastes of annaceed.
