Hello boys and girls, having a huge BBQ tomorrow to celebrate turning 27 and decided to buy myself a pig aswell as the usual BBQ meat. I pick the little fella up tomorrow morning and have the proper cooking thingy required to cook one but know very little about how long it should take, where to carve first etc, infact i know nothing at all!

Any tips? anyone cooked a full hog before?

Thanks in advance.

And remember that a spit-roast can mean different things to different people, depending on who you have invited to the BBQ.

What equipment have you actually got? I gas hog roaster or a iron spit you turn by hand over an open fire? Big difference.

On a proper gas fired hog roaster you need to allow up to 7 hours depending on the size of pig. Over an open fire or BBQ a hell of a lot longer.

I wonder how this is going?. Have the guests filled up on jam sandwiches waiting for the pig to finish cooking?. I know it takes me 6-8 hours just to do an average pork shoulder over slow charcoals and that was with preparation that started the night before. hehe

We did a hog roast for a party a couple of weeks ago. An 80lb pig took around 10 hours. But it tasted amazing!

I've seen one cooked in what appeared to be the exhaust of a small jet engine.

Ready in an hour or two.
