I'm tempted by this:-

I would have liked to actually see one before ordering, but it isn't in my local shop.
Has anyone bought one, or would any of the experienced BBQ'ers like to offer an opinion.
I don't want to spend £500+ only to find that I have to spend £1,200 next year. My OH would never let me hear the end of it.

My friends got one. We used it to do a beer can chicken and pigs in blankets on xmas day last year. Its an amazing piece of kit and much better value that the green egg as you get most of the "add ons" in with it. I think hes got the 24" one. Id love one, but cant afford for the amount it would get used :-(
Going by the talk on the forums, it's a decent bit of kit, but the hardware isn't quite up to BGE/Primo/Kamado Joe levels, and the seal can be a tad leaky (which you'd be replacing with nomex regardless of brand if you did pizza etc.).
Otherwise the benefits of a ceramic - huge insulation and heat storage, and the ability to run super efficient low and slow, or raging firepit pizza oven.

I have not seen any other types of ceramic cookers so i don't have much to compare it to. However, i have seen this one in Costco, it wasn't put together very well so the lid didn't shut properly. If had it been assembled correctly i think it would have been really quite good - nothing seemed weak or at risk of breaking. http://www.costco.co.uk/view/p/pit-boss-24-kamado-...

One point to note is that these do NOT come with the deflector plate which means it will not do low and slow indirect cooking out of the box. And nor do Costco stock the correct part. That has to come from the US at a cost of about £75. I guess you might be able to find something else to do the same thing at a cheaper price though.
As i said i have not seen a big green egg but the equivalent model with the same accessories would be about 3 times the price and i am confident its no way near 3 times better.

Thanks for the input.
I don't think that my local Costco has them in stock, so I cannot check it out. I had read comments that suggested that the hinges didn't fit properly. Surely that could be rectified with a screwdriver??
The fact that the BGE accessories will fit is a big bonus.
Another important point is that its cheaper in store so it might be worth a drive to get one. I think it was about £80 cheaper. I'm pretty sure a well put together one would be fine.I don't think that my local Costco has them in stock, so I cannot check it out. I've checked with the store. They are expecting some in on 27th of this month. I'll report back when I see one in the flesh.Worst case, the hinge and straps are a weak point. That won't be necessarily apparent quickly, but if it is the case, you'd still be saving a big chunk after buying a strap and hinge set from Kamado Joe or BGE. Monolith's one is even better as it's stainless, however UK distribution may be difficult.
I brought out the BBQ for the first time this year after moving house and picked up some pork ribs this morning. At only £3.25/kg I thought it was a bit of a bargain so we're now well fed tonight. I went for the 3-2-1 method and made my own rub including fennel seeds which gave a very good hint of aniseed flavour. I also mixed reggae reggie and normal BBQ sauce for the final flavour mix.
Once I cut into them the smoke ring was very deep and they tasted great. The meat had just the right amount of bite vs fall off the bone so I was very happy and of course my wife was happy to enjoy the fruits of my labour too. Although she commented on how 6 hours of cooking can disappear in 10 minutes.
Unfortunately no photos because we all know what ribs look like. I can't wait to continue with some recipes from my Weber cookbook and I'll be back to post results. I often think "what's the point in all the fuss with a BBQ when I can use the cooker" but the skill involved makes it taste so much better in the end.
Anyone else been cooking in this amazing weather or are you all at Costco?

I don't have that but i do have a Maverick which tends to be the most recommended wireless one on the forums.

I'm looking to buy my first barbecue (gas) - is anyone familiar with the 'Fire Mountain' brand selling on Amazon? They look pretty good, 4 burner model for around £200.
Also are the covers you get for them any good? Ideally it would stay out all year round so presume it would need to be covered during rainy weather.

Whilst I appreciate your argument Big Bob, I did a similar cook on Tuesday night, we think charcoal.
BBQ lives outside, take the top stickers off, load a chimney starter with coal and light some kitchen roll soaked in veg oil. Come inside and make the kebabs (10 mins?), take outside.
That ten minutes is enough to get the coals going, dump them in the basket, put the grillrack on, put kebabs on.
Perhaps five minutes longer overall lead time.
