I’ve been looking hard at the masterbuilt gravity stuff. A lot of negative reviews about reliability have stopped me pulling the trigger.

Their new auto ignite one may push me over the edge as it’s quite affordable, in relative terms.

Anyone had any experience of one?

I personally wouldn’t buy Masterbuilt , prime example of “buy cheap buy twice” , some may beg to differ but Weber Traeger Pit Boss offer the best vfm long term .

I read the same reviews and then went to have a look at one at local(ish) bbq place.

One of the chaps there had one personally and didn’t hesitate to recommend it (but did suggest we get a cover for it to keep the elements off due to the better being thinner than others on the market).

That being said, those bbqs with thicker metal were 3x the cost which I couldn’t justify

Keen to get the bbq fired up once it stops raining! Picked up a cheap chicken roaster insert for the weber kettle over the winter that I want to try, any tips on how best to use it? Got a few ideas kicking about
Also considering buying a rotisserie attachment as a birthday present (or some lego, it's a tough choice)

Get a rotisserie, that's a real game changer.

Fired mine up for the first cook(done the initial burn in like the manual) yesterday and the fan failed 20 mins into the cook. Now waiting on an answer to a warranty claim. Not a great first impression for something that was still close to a grand.

Tomorrow I will be up at the crack of dawn to start a brisket that isn't quite a brisket. It's a Federstück (see below). 4.3kgs worth. It's a bit of an experiment, but fingers crossed it will be worth the early start. It's currently dry brining in the fridge and will be rubbed with Meatheads big bad beef rub and smoked into submission on the kamado.

Turned out to be more like short ribs and ended up taking 15 and a half hours to get to 95 degrees internal temperature. Soft succulent meat that will keep us going for a few days

ready to be rubbed and to go on the grill

About 3 hours in

Finished product

I spent today building the new toy. Just need to get some fresh charcoal to season it

Is that the 1050? I have one. It has rusted a little outside in the 2 years that I have had it but it is a great bit of kit. Don't forget that you can run it on just wood, which I have done a couple of times when I have run out of charcoal mid cook. I did the Christmas ham on mine! Cooking in all weather is easy when it manages the fire for you

I saw the new XT this week. It's a really cool bit of kit but I don't need to upgrade yet.

FWIW I’ve just got a Yoder ys640s. So far seems built like a tank (European not Russian). WiFi control is good, direct seat etc too. First brisket this weekend !

Yep the 1050, I did buy the cover and very soon I should be having a BBQ shack installed which should keep it away from the worst of the elements.

Currently I have a rack of ribs on it!

Want to actually pull my finger out and do some smoking this year. Can’t decide between a Masterbuilt 560 or the cheaper option of the Onlyfire firebox kit for my trusty Weber kettle. Thoughts?

I’m going to have another go with this thread - got laid into last year by some tit for showing grilled food.

Have just bought the OnlyFire rotisserie, so today’s roast chicken can go on for the first try (normally chicken in the BBQ is beer can).

Will need to give the Weber a bit of a clean after it has had a regular soaking outside this winter (cover got blown off so many times….). Don’t think I have ever actually cleaned it before….
