Been on my diet now for a few days and missing the crisps. Come mid afternoon I'm starving.

Noticed things like Quavers and Wotsits are only about 99 calories a bag. Are they ok every now and then or are they really full of false promises and fat that'll hinder any chance of weight loss?

Moderation is the key. So yes, fine, as long as you don't sit and nerf down a 42 pack.

A colleague is on a diet and wolfs Quavers under the pretence that they are low in fat. It reminds me of the Little Britain sketch with Marjorie Dawes...

"Half the fat so you can eat twice as much fatties!"

Agree - everyone needs some treats now and again.

I'd stick to normal crisps (or get healthy choice ones, if you must) - in moderation.

Aren't normal crisps much oilier than the baked ones such as Wotsits, Quavers, Skips and French Fries? (God I'm hungry.)

Yes, they are. But a packet or two not going to hurt you.

I find walkers baked crisps can really fill a spot whilst dieting. Only 99 callories per bag and I don't notice any difference in taste.

Although I'm not a big fan of the whole healthy crisp scene, these actually are not bad, but crisps are not meant to be healthy.
Why can't we just gorge on junk anymore? I love Kettle crisps and the like frown

Surely the idea of being on a diet , is to be on a diet, not stuff yer chompers with things you ain't suppose to?

I am on a low GI, no carbs diet, have been for two weeks. I have stopped all snacking too, so crisp withdrawal is pretty hard. BUT, I am losing half a KG a day, and I'm still stuffing myself silly with certain foods, just no carbs. I haven't compromised on beers, I'm doing no exercise and no change in drinking habits. But shedding weight like no-ones business. Even bacon, sausages and eggs are limitless. Best diet ever! biggrin

I have had the odd bag of salt & vinegar crisps cloud9 so I reckon you can have a packet of Wotsits smile

When you say no carbs do you mean low carbs or have you really cut them out completely? I'm on a fairly low carb diet, the only exceptions being breakfast cereal (Optivia so should be reasonably healthy but does contain whole grain cereal, oats, sugar etc.) and normally some tinned sweetcorn in my evening salad. I'm only losing the weight very slowly though so I'm wondering whether to try a week or two of no carbs to see what effect that has.

I may also admit to having the odd bag of Wotsits as a lunchtime treat. A prince amongst crisps.

I thought beers were full of carbs? And losing half a kilo a day - that's incredible.

No carbs (except for beer). So no bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, or any other root type veg like carrots, no pizza, cakes, biscuits, etc etc etc. I've cut out sugars, even fruit is a no no. That and no snacking is having quite an effect.

Living off protein and veg.

Not good for me long term I'm sure. But for a couple of months to lose a few stones, get rid of my belly and shrink a couple of jean sizes down, it'll do.

Already my belly has gone from being a heavy lumpen mass that is in the way, to something squishy and lightweight, and I'm tightening my belt and my shirt is hanging out all the time, so it's clearly starting to dissolve.

I have bought into the science behind the whole Atkins, South Beach, low GI thing. It's carbs that make you fat, not fat (or calories per se).

Stuffing myself silly with all sorts of nice scrummy food too, just no carbs and nothing sugary. Having read various books and websites on the subject, I'm working my own hybrid version of no carb and low GI.

Lost 6kgs in a fortnight, will stop when my belly and jowels have gone smile

To be honest, your diet sounds just what I'm looking for.

I've been having slim fast shakes for breakfast and lunch this week paperbag and even though I actually think they taste great they're not quite hitting the spot, surprise, surprise.

So is it basically loads of cheese, eggs, nuts, all meat, salad? Doesn't sound too bad at all.

Luckily I'm quite skinny anyway, I have skinny arms and legs, so having gotten older and put weight on, it is ALL on my belly and double chin and jowels. Nowhere else. So hopefully, that is were it is going to burn off first too by getting my body to eat itself and not turn carbs/sugars into reserves.

I have no doubt that it's not healthy, but I'm not too fussed about that, I can also fast for the odd day no problem if I want to fast track a KG. Sheer bloody mindedness plays its part too!

Stephen Fry lost six stones in six months.
